Hello all! Unfortunately I'm a new user, who found the website through research into my own condition. I'm a phlebotomy student, and on my third day of class I was injured by another student. we were practicing venipunctures, and she drew from my basilic vein and hit my Ulnar nerve. I know now that the basilic vein is a high risk area, and shouldn't be drawn from....
Anyway, has any one here suffered nerve damage from a blood draw? All the horror stories I'm reading online are very unsettling.. The first few days I had constant tingling like when you hit your elbow, most people call it your "funny bone". It's actually the ulnar nerve. The ER doctor I saw said it should be temporary, and my discharge papers say I was seen for "Paresthesias". It's very frustrating for me, because a year ago I had arthroscopic surgery to repair a SLAP tear in the same arm, and I had just gotten back into weight lifting. Now this happens to me, and I've been told to stop lifting weight once again until it heals, which he couldn't give me a time frame...
I'm going to see a specialist as soon as the referral comes through and get the emg done to see what is exactly going on. I have to say, I've felt pain before, but nerve pain is on a whole other level. If I have to deal with this for the rest of my life I will go crazy, and I'm sorry for any one who does. Anyway, has anyone here suffered from nerve damage from a venipuncture(blood draw)? And if so, how have you recovered?
