Hip Bursitis?

Hi all I have had chronic pain in my right hip/thigh so bad it's 9/10 pain and feels like my leg is giving out so have not left the house for 3 weeks, I struggle to get up out of chairs

Been to the Doctors 3 times and they said it could be Hip Bursitis due for a ultrasound scan in a week.

Could Hip Bursitis cause this much pain? Where it practically disables you?

Am at my wits end.

Hi Trev & welcome to the forum. So sorry to read about the bursitis. Yes, it can be very, very painful. However, with that being said your dr sure has not done you any favors by doing nothing for you in 3 weeks except order an ultrasound! I get it in both hips, left more than right. My dr generally gives me an injections for the inflammation & it improves until the next flare-up. Did the dr give you anything to help with the inflammation?

Hopefully you will get some answers quick. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Hi thanks for the reply.

They gave me codeine and paracetamol but doesn't seem to do the job also it's constipated me to add to my woes.

Does it practically stop you getting about? I can hobble about the house that's about it... It's throbbing now as I type this cry don't know where to put myself.

Sorry to hear about your hip bursitis. I've also had this, three times to be exact. Normally a doctor can diagnose this by moving your leg and hip while you lie on a table in the exam room and also by pressing the joint. If an x-ray shows there is no bone fractures, then the usual treatments for bursitis are a steroid shot into the bursa, oral steroids and/or anti-inflammation medication and physical therapy. If it is caused by over-use (exercise or sports, etc.), then the therapist will show you have to avoid it in the future and what exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles around the hips.

I think you should be getting faster treatment from what you're saying!

Yeah the pain is driving me crazy can't concentrate on anything.

Its really sore when I lie flat and lift my leg the pain is intense, what frustrates me more is being cooked up in the house due to feeling like my leg is giving way.

May give the doctors another visit.

When I had it really bad, I could hardly go up the stairs. Going down was not as difficult. You need some kind of immediate treatment. If I were you, I'd find another doctor. Bursitis is not hard for a GP to diagnose.

Even though it can be caused by overuse, it can also be caused by too much sitting. Before any exercise is beneficial though, you need to have some kind of treatment for the inflammation. Now!

I was diagnosed with bursitis of the hips back in my 20's. I'm now in my 50's. The added weight of pregnancy was when mine was at it's all time worst.

I've had cortisone injections in both hips when the pain had become debilitating.

I've since learned which activities will cause a flare up and I can either avoid them or take naproxen ahead of time. For me, squatting to wash floors or weed my garden seems to be the worst activity.

Having a soak in Epsom salts helps, but I can only do this if someone is here in case I need help getting back out of the tub.

I haven't tried glucosomine yet. I've heard it can cause increased cholesterol and I'm already on Lipitor for that!

I'd suggest you try regular aspirin or naproxen, both over the counter, unless you have stomach or allergy issues which would contra indicate their use.

Just a small update 1st of April I couldn't bare any weight without the pain being so intense I couldn't walk.

So went to A&E and had a xray showed nothing so was admitted to hospital for 11 days the consultant orderèd a MRI and it showed that it is Transient Osteoporosis of the Hip.

Said that will get better on it's own in 6-12 months, still in pain now but at least I know what it is.

I see the consultant in 6 weeks and another MRI in 3 months.

Its been a pain to get around the house.

Anyone else had this?

Hi Trev, I looked in the archives here at Healing Well & did not find any information about this type of a problem. I have not ever heard of it before either.

I did read the article in the link you provided. Based on that information I would take a copy of it to the dr & say ok, here is what I have researched & I would like to know what your plan is for treatment.

The good thing I suppose according to the article this is not going to be a life long condition. However, what are you suppose to do until it runs its course?

Yeah hospital have just gave me codeine and paracetamol for the pain which isn't really cutting it.

I'll have to try the doctor for something more stronger when I was in hospital they gave me oramorph which did the trick.

I now have a wheelchair for long journeys as I can't weight bare.

I would find a different doctor. Have you been to a pain clinic or seen a rheumatologist Both would probably have given you a quick bursa injection after moving your leg around and pushing on the trigger spots.
