I have chronic impingement syndrome following 2 surgeries in each shoulder. Then, on top of it, I was first hit by a truck as I was walking my dog, tearing the labrum and also had a fall at the dog park, causing a grade 5 separation of the same shoulder! The first surgeon said nothing could be done because after the second surgery where the collar bone was 'shaved', my body reabsorbed even more, leaving me without the last inch of the collar bone. It was 3 years later before I got a second opinion. That surgeon put me in physical therapy, which made everything else that's wrong with me flare up horribly. At best, another surgery, using cadaver tissue to 'tie down' the end of the collar bone would have only had a 50/50 shot at working. I decided it wasn't worth it.
Having said all of that, I would like to share some of the 'tricks' I use to help with the pain...
Aleve (naproxen sodium) seems to work best on my ball and socket joint issues.
Placing a rolled up hand towel in the arm pit helps keep it in optimal 'at rest' position. You fold the towel in thirds and then roll it. You can tape it like this for repeated use. I use this if I'm sitting or walking. Keeping my hand in my pocket, either pants pocket or sweatshirt pocket.
I have an extra pillow for sleeping so that instead of laying on the shoulder I am 3/4 turned and having the front of my shoulder against the mattress. It's close to 'side sleeping' without crushing the joint.
If I'm on my back, I use the pillow to support the shoulder joint so that it doesn't 'hang back'.
Don't curl your shoulders in, as one does when crossing the arms in front. Keep them back and 'open'.
If seated on an armless chair, place a throw pillow on the lap to support the forearm, taking the stress of the shoulder joint.
I hope my experience will be beneficial to someone.
