Hi all,

I am on week 2 of a nasty bout of what turned out to be shingles..I had an infection and pain in my abdomen (diverticulitis) and put liniment on for the pain, so when this rash first appeared I just figured I was having a reaction to the liniment...boy was I WRONG.

I was already into the shingles for a week before I got on Vatrex. Now at a week and a half, the rash is not as angry/swollen ....but strangely I feel the tingly sensitive feelings now near my armpits!

Can shingles pop up in another area as the original area heals? I can't believe after days of Valtrex another spot could emerge, is that possible? Or is this just my body dealing with the healing?

Hi BrendaLOC & welcome to the forum. We have had members with shingles use Gabapentin for the pain. This is something your GP can prescribe for you. My granddaughter got shingles & had outbreaks in various places. Her dr put her on Gabapentin & it helped her a lot.

Get in to see your GP or call his nurse & see if they will call you in a script. Take care.

Is there a forum just for Shingles? Or is this the correct place to post?

We do not have a forum for shingles. However, please feel free to post here as we do understand what it's like dealing with pain.

Hopefully the Gabapentin will kick in & start giving you some relief, it will take a few days.

Sorry you are dealing with the shingles. Hope by now you are better.

I ask my family doc for the shingles vaccine shot last visit and he said they do not give. I must go to the pharmacy and get. I found that odd.

You need to get shingles treated as soon as possible!! Even if they appear to be going away -- I have a friend who didn't treat hers and now she has PERMANENT nerve pain in the area.

Thanks everyone for your replies....I honestly didn't realize what it was at first, I thought I was having a reaction to a muscle cream i put on...by the time I went to urgent care it was well into the blister stage! I took the Acylovir...but I didn't take the Gabapentin because I was getting better and the side effects seemed worse than the pain.

I notice now that the scabs have mostly disappeared that I am sensitive in areas around the rash, but not where the rash was. Hoping that's normal!

I realize it's been a couple of weeks since the last comment BUT...

Shingles is Herpes which never goes completely away. It is a mutation from Chicken Pox. While it mostly shows up as a rash on the trunk of the body, it can appear ANYWHERE on the body.

There are medications already mentioned but one thing the doctors rarely tell patients is that herpes viruses require Arganine to replicate. Arganine is an amino acid. Foods containing Arganine should be consumed minimally and outright avoided during an outbreak. The amino acid L-Lysine can suppress replication but is not found in sufficient amounts in foods and can be taken as a supplement. Taking L-Lysine will not guarantee no outbreak but it can help limit the severity in many people.

I also think it is odd. For me personally, I will not get vaccinations at a pharmacy. Call.a Urgent Care Clinic in your area and asked if they give them.

The CDC recommends that healthy adults ages 50 and older get the shingles vaccine, Shingrix, which provides greater protection than Zostavax. The vaccine is given in two doses, 2 to 6 months apart. Zostavax is still in use for some people ages 60 and older.
