Due to two bad knees, I checked out rolling walkers at med supply places some years back, and didn't like them because they offered no support, stability, or balance help, and had me tilting forward to maintain contact with the handgrips. Since they weren't any help I didn't get one. Instead, I eventually got two offset handle, small base, quad canes, which do help, but do still have me tilting forward a little bit, just not as much as the walkers I had tried.
My knees have gotten worse over the years, so about a year or two ago I started checking out rolling walkers again, but didn't have enough money at the time to buy one, and still didn't like what was available. Well, I finally had enough money for a good rolling walker, and found one that filled my height and width criteria. It also had a new kind of handgrip. These grips flare out in back, to form a palm rest. In trying out the model I finally ordered, I found that this palm rest solves the problem of support, stability, balance help, and also helps to keep the walker from getting too far in front of you, so it keeps you from having to lean too far over to maintain contact. I've noticed a number of models now have this flared out style of handgrip. It looks like something that wouldn't matter, but it really does make all the difference.
If you are looking into buying a rolling walker, either now or in the future, for yourself, or for someone else, be sure to try out models with the handgrips that flare out to form a palm rest.
I had to spend more for my model, as I needed a non-standard sized model. Most rolling walkers are made for average and tall sized people, including the wide ones. I needed a wide model with a lower than average seat, and there are very few models like that, so they cost more. Anyway, the one I got--a Nova Mini Mac--is a nice sturdy model, and thanks to those flared out hand grips, it is working out well for me. Glad I finally got a good rolling walker, that I can actually use.
