Just maybe you could be one of the people who do not metabolize opioids much. They don't do much of anything for nerve pain anyway. I stopped taking them without even having any withdrawal. I had already tried the laundry list of "nerve" medicines with no relief, just side effects.
I now take tramadol (TID) for my nociceptive pain, which I call my "real" pain from bone injuries. It's different, works a little for that. But I haven't found any prescription pain meds that work on my neuropathies.
My pain doc gave me a mj card. I tried external thc cream which only works the same way other pain creams work - by causing burning sensation (from the other additives) that distract from the pain. I tried the drops which gave me tachycardia when taking low dose, and just made me sleepy and confused with a higher dose, without doing anything for pain. (These are known, studied reactions)
So now I take a few ibuprofen when the pain gets bad, because three times a day tramadol isn't enough.
