Question on pain contract...

So I signed a pain contract with my PCP - on the same appointment that she started a referral to see a pain doctor - I start seeing the new pain specialist in January.

I have no problem with a pain management contract - they make complete sense to me - protecting the doctor - the clinic - and myself.

The problem that I'm having is that I found out on Tuesday what the date for my gastric bypass was. It then dawned on me that without some cooperation between my surgeon and my PCP I'll be in violation of the pain contract. It stated that I can/will not receive treatment for pain in any form from another doctor - and that I'll only get my prescriptions filled at the CVS I use.

I called my PCP on Tuesday giving them the surgery date and asking about the pain contract - I got called back and was told I was right - I would be in violation of the contract - she took down my surgeons name - and said they'd call back on Wednesday. Well I hadn't heard anything from them and went in for my pre-op appointment today. My surgeon gave me a script for liquid oxycodone - it's a stomach operation and he wants all his patients on liquids only for the first week - even crushing my meds isn't good enough for him that week. I told him about my contract so he told me to just take the script call my PCP and that she could take the script and rewrite it. I know that I can't fill this script without breaching the contract. I called my PCP today was told I'd be called back today after 4pm - wasn't called back. I don't need the script yet - and wont until I get out of the hospital. BUT - what do I do if they dont call me back? I was figuring giving them until Thursday and then going in to wait for someone to talk to. But now I'm worried that the surgeon even writing me the script was wrong.

Does anyone have any thoughts? This is the first problem I've had with this doctor who has never given me any problems before now - and she's an awesome doctor. I know the pain contracts were something they had just started doing a couple months ago - so I might very well be the first person they've encountered with the problem.

It's this whole - I signed it - and even being put under for the surgery would "technically" be in breach of the contract.

Ideas?

I agree with Nikao, but I would call around to pharmacies and make sure you can find the liquid. When I had my gastric bypass almost 5 years ago I had a really hard time finding the liquid, I ended up having to get it ordered for me, so you really don't want to wait until the last minute to get it.

Also I have been in the hospital having surgery (since then) and I just call my pain doctor and tell the office that I have had surgery and this is what was prescribed to me and they just note it on my chart, and that was it.

I know the CVS by us carries the liquid - because I called them the same day I got my surgery date to ask if my medications can be crushed until I run out then gotten in liquid form - I was told that all of them are availible in liquid or capsules that can be opened, and all are safe to crush. :)

I figure I'm giving my PCP till friday afternoon to call me back on it - and then I'll go sit in the hospital until I get word that I'm good to go. That will have given them almost two weeks to make up their minds :P

Thanks for the imput - I know I'm more scared than I should be over it - it's just that I NEED the pain medication to function. This morning I was hurting so bad that I asked hubby to bring me a pill and something to drink before he left for work because I hurt so bad I could barely move. My husband does his best to understand - but he doesn't get the whole 24/7 pain thing.
