Crohns and IUD for birth contol

I have some concern of having an IUD for birth control and having Crohns.  Are we more suseptable to infection with one?  Anyone have any positive insight?  I cannot take BC pills due to blood clotting disorders, and my only other option was IUD.  Helppppppppppppppp!  Kim

I know of people that have had IUDs and Crohn's and I have not heard of an issue, but your physician should know the safety on this issue.

I've never posted on here before but thought I'd chime in... I have Crohn's and an IUD for birth control for the same reason - I cannot take the BC pill due to clotting reasons. I've had the IUD for about 2 years now and have never had any problems with it, infection or otherwise. My GI knows I have it and has never brought up any concerns regarding infections.

have had Crohns for 21 years and an IUD for the past seven years. I have not any problems. My Doctor told me that it was safer for me to have the IUD than to risk becoming preg. However, I have two children- that may be hard to listen to for someone that wants to become preg.

Crohn's IS my birth control.
Well, it was before my hysterectomy. Have you considered your partner assuming the "burden". No side effects unless you are allergic to latex.

Have you thought about the Depo shot? I've used that in the last few years. I'm on blood pressure meds, which keep me from the pill. I had a bone density scan to check to see if my bones were ok before starting it. Talk to your Dr.

I've had my IUD for two years. I was DX with Crohn's in May of this year. It hasn't given my any problems. My GI doesn't want me pregnant, so it has been a godsend.

I think you need to be wary of a perforation, especially if you have severe fistulizing and stricturing disease. A few times I've had internal fistuals between the intestine and my ovaries/that area...so I was advised not to put anything up there that would complicate the issue.

I was curious how painful you found it when it was inserted into the (cringe) cervix

They told me it would be mildly uncomfortable but that was an understatement. I cramped for a couple of hours after with some spotting. After about 6 months though NO period for the last year and a half. That is the best part!!

My OB wants me to go on one, because my hormones are all screwed up. Thanks for the post. I was wondering about the cramping from CD and the IUD and if there was a problem.

I have an IUD and it was put in place in Jan 2000 so I have mine for almost 8 years. I might have it taken out at my 10 year point and put right back in. I have not had any problems with it but mine was out in before I knew I had CD. I have the copper style that does not contain any hormones etc... Karen
