Horrible hospital experinece

I was admitted tuesday to the hospital because I have been in a flare and can't get out of it. I have never received worse care than i did at this hospital. i went through the er, and the gi fellow that came to take my history needed to go back to medical school to learn how to take a history. IBD is my only medical problem, yet he spent forty minutes asking me the same questions over and over while he confused himself. All the doctors wanted to do was put me on steriods, which was already tried a few months ago by my peds gi doctor, and they did no good. So I finally told them i wanted discharged since they couldn't seem to do anything for me. I am going to try and get an appointment with a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic, and in the meantime follow up with my PCP. Oh, the doctors also took me off of all of my medications. Anyway, just needed to vent.

Sorry you had such a horrrible visit. I've always found the ER to be a terrible place for Crohnies! I am however impressed that the ER DOC took 40 minutes with you. Sucks that it was unproductive though.

I was in the hospital b4 xmas. Went to ER with lower abdominal pain, that wasn't like my Crohn's pain. They started an IV and tried to give me morphine b4 even taking a history...... hello, dangerous much. I had to stop the nurse and ask her if she thought it might be a good idea to get my history, allergies, medical conditions first. That was scarey! Ended up not being a Crohn's thing, and I didn't think it was to begin with, but still wanted a GI consult and had to request one. I was at a University hospital, and the "GI" consult that came to see me introduced himself as the Gut Doctor...... In the course of talking about my symptoms and other medical conditions, he revealed he was actually going into Cardiology...... seriously, I understand residency and a teaching hospital, but if you have a pateint with a serious history, can't you get someone that knows whats going on....... annoying!

I am sorry you had a bad experience in the ER. It is always helpful to the manager of the ER if you call or send a letter clearly stating your issues so they can be followed up on.  Feedback on your visit may save another patient from a bad experience.

Ill be at the Cleveland clinic the end of the month. I took about a month to get in so not that bad I guess.

I just got out of the hospital and I also had an extremely awlful experience.  I am a nurse and I know how the "ER Staff"  treat people with chronic illnessess.  They think that we are all just drug seeking.  It really ticks me off.  Where is the compassion?  I just wish that those ignorant "professionals" could spend just one day in our shoes during a flare and I can guarentee that their attitudes' would defintely change.....

I am one of those ignorant "professionals" who HAS and DO spend every day in those very shoes. As a Registered Nurse I feel for you(And all of us). We all do not think everyone is drug seeking but we do see alot of abuse of the system and we are tiered, understaffed and abused too. I had a lady snap he fingers in my face yesturday and shout "HELLO, HELLO I am in pain nurse". I had been giving her drugs at the moment(alot of them). Then she says "I gotta pee". Then before I get back with the bedpan she is yelling across the recovery room, NURSE!!!! I want a drink of water right now, OWWWW OWWWW my foot hurts!!!!
Ok, so anyhow, you get my drift. I have been treated just as poorly as you have and I am so so sorry. But we are not the problem. The insurance companies, drug companies, parasites of the community and the whole setup of healthcare is to blame.
Don't listen to me I am on a steroid induced rage anyhow.

I am so sorry jellybean that in my rabid state of mind I forgot to say that I am sorry you were subject to such ineptitude. Also glad to hear you are going to Cleaveland Clinic, they may be a great help. Let me know I may join you! :-)

Like I said, I am a registered nurse also and I ALWAYS try to put myself in the patient's shoes.  It is not the patients' fault that we are understaffed and deserve to be treated with KINDNESS, UNDERSTANDING, and COMPASSION.  I feel that most nurses these days go into the profession for the money and not for the true desire to help others.  We all have bad days but it is never okay to take your bad day out on a patient despite their personality.

I had to go to the ER just before Xmas because I thought I had pneumonia. I couldn't breathe. I was already on antibiotics for a sinus/ear infection. Well when I got home 10 hours later after every test imaginable (told I had bronchitis, even though I wasn't coughing) I was covered in red splotches with pus filled centers. I had been followed by the same doctor all day, the same nurse for most of the time, and no one noticed that I had now developed these huge splotches. Of course there are no mirrors in the ER, so I hadn't seen it. I had to take myself back to the ER the next day and suggest that maybe I was having a drug reaction to the antibiotic! NO, they told me, the two issue were totally separate. The splotches were a viral rash. Go home and wait for it to go away, oh and by the way, you're contaigeous!

The dermatologist the next day confirmed that it was the antibiotic and told me to never take it or anything in its class again.

I'm sorry for your ordeal, I hope you can get an appointment soon!

I'm sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I know first hand how maddening and frustrating it can be to have poor service. The hospital is the last place you want to be, and when you're sick and scared, the last thing you need is to be treated poorly. Hopefully you'll get the good care you need to get out of your flare soon.

I totally agree with you. I am very offended by those nurses and physician as well who are only in it for the $$$. I need to make a living sure, but without compassion you are dead. I would quit or change jobs sooner than lose my humanity(I truly hope so). My problem is I feel TOO much for the patients at times that I feel awful when I get home!

Again, I am sorry you had such a bad time. My dad died of lymphoma 2 years ago and his oncologist ignored him when he complained of a strange pain after his second remision. he was dead 8 months later.

I got an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic for the end of February. Hopefully I can make it until then!

jellybean - Who are you seeing at the Cleveland Clinic? I have been a patient there for several years and absolutely love my GI. He is one of the best!
