I am terrified of all this talk about having a catheter...can someone walk me through the process? I am a 20 year old female...I think male experiences may differ from the female perspective? Maybe not. Please, I'm terrified! I would like some information....all the details! From the moment you find out you need one to right after they take it out.

You mean for your pee? It is very easy. They wipe your bottom, insert the catheter. It is absolutely painless. While it is in, you feel like you have to pee the whole time. Then when it is time to come out, they just pull it out!

Mine was put in while I was still sedated during my resection surgery. I had to take it home with me after my release. Wore it for 2 weeks while my bladder healed. Didn't hurt at all but it was kind of gross dragging it around with me, but since I was pretty stationary trying to recoup it wasn't too bad.

As mentioned, the catheter will most likely be inserted while you are sedated. It is absolutely nothing to be worried about. It is not painful. It is actually a blessing as you will not have to get up to urinate for the first while after the surgery. Removal is not difficult either.

ok u guys i don't want to be a downer, BUT, when i was in the hospital b4 i was having trouble going after a simple procedure, they tried to put the catheter in me and i felt like i was dying! sorry. They couldn't do it, i just told them that i'd wait it out. Luckily i peed like the next day and i was thanking Jesus!

But, i wanted to know is it common for them to put in a catheter during surgery. That surely would be better to get it during sedation. But you guys are talking about resection. What about ostomies? Do most people need catheter's after ostomies? Oh Lord, i never thought of that and now i'm getting freaked out again...that experience was very traumatic for me

Most catheters (foleys) are put in during surgery,I have had two for my csections and didn't have any problems. I also put them in all the time at work,and the patients don't complain,now sometimes,the first time you pee after they take out the cath,it may burn a little. Good luck :-)

I just had a resection performed a week ago. They placed the catheter in once I was sedated, and after I woke up, I didn't realize that I had it in. I told the nurses that I needed to urinate and they told me that I had a catheter so didn't need to worry about getting up. I was worried that it would slip out, but they reassured me that there was a little balloon at the end that was keeping it in place. The tube was taped very high up on my thigh with some slack, so it wasn't tugging around or too noticeable. At night time when they helped me to shift positions while I slept they just ensured that there was enough slack on the cord so it didn't tug. Whether I was on my back or either side, I could barely feel it once I was settled down. They left it in the day after surgery to save me the hassle of having to use the washroom, and though I was walking around quite a bit I barely even noticed it. They removed it the next morning, and I didn't even realize that it was out until I saw the nurse walking away from my bed! I had no burning or soreness when I urinated without the catheter either, so all in all, a fairly harmless experience. Note that I am a female, and from the messages above, it sounds like this experience might be a little bit different for the males!
