  I would like to see if anyone has any experience with breastfeeding and taking their meds.  I am due March 19th and have been off my Pentasa with no problems during my pregnancy... Doctors suggestion since my Crohn's is mild.  Gastro doctor said I could stay off meds for 4-6 weeks after delivery then to get back on them.  I asked about breastfeeding and Pentasa and he said ... ask your ob.  I just want advice from others as well.

Hi dimab,

I was put on pentasa after delivery so I would be able to breastfeed,but my milk dried up & since I had just undergone major surgery after delivery,I decided to not go back to breastfeeding.

I don't know if this is helpful to you,just wanted to let you know that I was also prescribed pentasa for the same reason.I would definitely check with your OB first though.

I wasn't on any meds but I did breastfeed my baby. For some reason my baby wasn't getting what he was needing from my breastmilk. I thought it was my supply but when I pumped I had a decent supply this was with all of my children. It was before I was diagnosed but I am pretty sure I had crohns then as well. The peds said that it may have been not enough nutrients... I'm really not sure since every person and doctor is different. I had to supplement with extra formula but I did continue to breastfeed them. I finally had to stop breastfeeding my 11 week old on saturday due to the prep for the colonoscopy. It was very heartbreaking. I wish you the best and hope that you are able to breastfeed your baby. Just do your best and keep yourself healthy.

I have nursed on predinsone, a 2 week dose of vicadin, and asacol. I am now nursing on 6mp and predinsone. Check with your doctor (gi and ob) and pharmacist. The american pediatric association or something like that says you can breastfeed unless you are a heavy drinker, heavy drug user or have hiv. I nursed one while not feeling so hot and he did just as well as my twins do now that I am feeling really well. I have excellent success with nursing even with the short time I nursed my first born. But everyone is different. It is all about what you are comfortable with. I have even read that the vitamin D from your prenatal vitamin does not get into the breast milk so breastfed babies need supplement. My doctor and pharmacist said any amount that would enter the breastmilk would be slim to none. And that breastfeeding without a flare is far more important!
I am huge advocate of breastfeeding so I hope you do it but just remember it is not for everyone and you may not feel comfortable doing it on meds. My formula fed son is just as healthy and smart as the others.

I am also breastfeeding my little girl, who is going on 3 months. I am taking asacol, welacol, Imuran 100mg. My GI doctor was against me breastfeeding, but the Lactation Consultant, OBGYN, Peditration, Dr. Thomas Hale author of the book Medication for Mother's Milk, said it would be okay. It is a tough decision, I struggled with it my whole pregnancy. Go with your Gut feeling and pray.
