I've had crohn's disease for 8 years now. In that time I've been on Asacol, Pentasa, 6mp, Imuran, and most recently Remicade. I've also been on and off Prednisone several times a year for each of the 8 years. Nothing has really worked all that well for me for any length of time. The Remicade attacked me worse than my crohn's ever has. My doctor wants me to try Humira. While I know that Humira works well for a lot of people, I'm a little nervous about it since my Remicade reaction. I was wondering if anyone on here was taking any other medications that I might be able to look into and talk about with my doctor.

I have been on all those drugs to....Remicade worked wonders for me until my body built anti-bodies to the drug. So then my doctor told me to try humira. It sucked at first cause I had to do 4 shoots all that once but I have been on it for over a year now and have been in remission. When I first started I was using the humira pens that are spring loaded and that hurt really bad cause it went way to fast. Now I just do the syringe very other week, the first month I got sick to my tummy after but now I have no problems at all.

I, too, have been on many of those and had great results with Remicade until I built antibodies to it. I have been on Humira for a year now and it's been a miracle drug for me. It has less risk of reaction, and is available to do at home instead of under teh watch of a doctor.

I haven't had any issues or reactions and saw results within a week or two of my loading doses.

I also had a reaction to remicade. No I am on Levisan and Welchol. And I am in remission after being on 6mp, pentasa, entocort, pred, remicade, asacol, Azathioprine i think that is all..  I finally found something that has so far worked.. Good luck

Thanks for all your help guys, you have given me a lot to look in to! :) I also appreciate the success stories with Humira, I have been really nervous about the prospect of using it!

I was glad you started this thread as I too might have to stop remicade, and have basically reacted to everything out there. Perhaps Humira might be an option for me too (I was worried that it would be too similar to remicade and won't be able to take it)

I was on all those medications and more with no real remission in 15 years. I had a reaction to Remicade and had to stop it. It hadn't worked that well anyway. Humira has been a wonderful drug and miracle for me. I have been in remission now for nearly two years. I think you should give it a try. Use the syringes though, because they are not nearly as painful as those pens. Good luck!

I had an awful reaction to Remicade and I too was leary of starting Humira. I find that it works very well. I do have to take either Benadryl and/or Hydroxine as I am alleric to latex and that is the only way it comes packaged. I actually called Abbott, the company that makes Humira, and was basically told to stop taking the drug or put up with the itching and hardness at the injection site. So far so good. I am in a very similar situation Nikki. I've been on almost every medication out there with it either not working or having a severe reaction. I've been taking cortenema recently and within the next couple weeks will be starting the Humira. My doctor has been putting it off for about a year, which I was ok with but always feeling sick is getting frustrating. I'm pretty nervous about the Humira since I have heard it stings but hopefully this will finally be the medication that works for me! Good luck to you!

I dont want to sell false hope here but I to was on all those medications, I was just getting ready to switch to humira when I decided to try a more natural approach.

I went with the Makers Diet and have been improving every day, 3 weeks in now and I feel almost as good as I did when I first got sick. I am of course going to check with my doctor on the 26th of this month and have a full blood workup done to see if these changes are making a difference in my vitamin levels, inflamation levels and any other levels they can think of to check.

The remicade did not work for me, neither did any of the other drugs for the last three years.

I very much hope you get better no matter which route you take. The book changed my life, I only hope I can return the favor through telling of my current success.

I'm either allergic or non-responsive to the traditional oral RX used for crohns (I have crohns-colitis specifically, so imuran and asacol, ect didn't do a thing and I was severely allergic) so I had no choice but to put my skeptisism aside and go the natural route and with success...I use bee propolis, omegas 3-6-9, probiotics, fibre supplements and Vitamins, B12, C and A...changed my diet cutting out all junk and processed foods/beverages, drink chamomile tea and water only and exercise regularly and I've gone from 30+ BM's/day with blood, mucus and pain to 5 or less formed stools, no blood, pain, mucus.\

Of course not one thing works for all and often it's a combination that helps the most, just have to find the combo for you, but there is hope...I'm not in total remission (after almost 17 yrs now of having CD) but I'll take what I can get.

I had a terrible reaction while on Remicade, after my second treatment, and had to discontinue it. Then about a year later I asked my GI about Humira, he had never treated a patient with Humira yet, but agreed to let me be his guinea pig. It has made a world of difference in how I feel, how I look, and my quality of life has improved sooo much. Now, I will tell you that I still have to take 3 to 6mg of Entocort daily also. But the combination of the Humira and the Entocort has reduced my D from a dozen times per day to about twice a day, the abdominal cramping has drastically reduced also. I have gained about 12lbs in the past few months because I can finally eat food and it stays in me...haha. My latest colonoscopy showed that most of my ulcers in colon have healed and the inflammation is under control.
I highly recommend giving Humira a try, and if you haven't tried Entocort ask your GI about it too.

Humira has been a miracle for me.  In October I was basically told I either get better or I have my colon removed.  Basically, Humira was my last chance for now since I had tried everything else.  I say go for it.  Trust me, it is worth it.  Being able to leave the house and do what I want is worth the effort of the injection every other week.
