I'm having some problems. This may get long but please bear with me, I'm in desperate need of help. In Dec. 06 I had a rectal abscess come up that had to removed. The left it open to drain but it has never healed. There is still a little whole which I have always drained. I started taking Remicade in Oct. 07 and its been working really well for me. It didn't "close" the open hole but it had pretty much quit draining and it was no longer causing me any pain. Until about a week ago I started noticing that after I was having a bm that my rear was really sore, especially around this wound. Then last Friday, I had bm and then went out to eat dinner with my family. Came home and had another bm and when I sat down I noticed that the wound hadn't drained any, but then when I sat down I felt something funny around that wound and stood up to find a yellowish cloudy liquid dripping out of my wound. This was late Friday night so I decided to wait it out and try and get in touch with my doc on Monday. The next day (Saturday) I went on in to work and worked for about 4 hours. I work in bridal/prom sales so I was in the middle of helping a girl find her dress when I got REALLY nauseous. I excused myself to the bathroom and vommitted. I left work, came home and used the restroom only to find that the bandage I use to cover my wound was SOAKED in a dark yellow pus like substance with an awful odor. So I call my family doc and she starts me on Cipro and Flagyl and tells me to get in touch with my GI. He's worried that I have another abscess so he sent me this past tuesday for a ct abdomen and pelvis. Calls me the next and says there is an are suspicous of abscess/fistula and wants me to see a surgeon right away. So today I go see a colo-rectal surgeon who examines me and tells me there is nothing wrong. But, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG!!! I haven't had drainage or pain like this in so long, and plus as most of you can, you just know when something is wrong. I'm so frustrated and I don't know what to do! He gave me no explanation what-so-ever! The pain feels very similar to the last abscess I had and I don't want to wait around for it to get as bad as that one did(it was the size of grown male fist).

Anybody have any experiences like this? Or advice on what to do?

I called my GI after the appointment and he said that my surgeon was the "expert" so he agrees with him. He sent me home with a script for pain killers and told me he'd be in touch! HELP!!! I don't know what to do!

Get a second opinion ASAP! Docs are human and make mistakes all the time. Trust your gut instinct and get a second opinion!

Dell your GI that THIS surgeon obviously cannot be a help, can he refer you do another one ASAP. If it gets any worse, call him & tell him to meet you at your hospital..

I believe I would fire my GI and the surgeon!

If the abscess bursted, it may be why the surgeon didn't see it...? Doesn't mean there's nothing wrong tho. Get a second opinion asap.

Make sure they have a good look at the area with diagnostic equipment if needed. Maybe some bloodwork to make sure the infection didn't spread? This is what I would be asking.

Hi Malibu05...I now have an ileostomy but suffered for several yrs. w/ abcesses. Some were as large as you described; others, many around the anus, were much smaller & would form, burst & drain. The large ones up the crack of my butt would sometimes get really large & I would press on them (tricky, trying to lay on the floor & view these w/ a make-up mirror) until they burst...yes, yellow, foul-smelling discharge. They would often refill a few times & I would repeat the process. The problem is, I would always end up going to my GI after I popped these & therefore, she was unable to see the extent of the abcess. However, she never doubted that I had them & would always place me on Cipro (I eventually refused to take Flagyl because it made me sooo nauseas). Anyway, one time when my GI was on vacation, I experienced excrutiating internal one-sided rectal pain. I got right in to see her colleague...he did all tests 'Stat' & immediately sent me to Boston for a Cat-Scan. I was so hungry that on the way home I stopped for Chinese food (I know, why a food that isn't Crohn's friendly...I must have been on Prednisone at the time). I also picked up a fresh loaf of bread. I walked into my apt. & laid the food out on the table when I realized the message light blinking on my phone. It turned out to be the GI, explaining that they tried to page me at the hospital (I had bolted out of there) & that I needed to go to the emergency room as they found a rectal abcess which needed immediate attention, probably surgery. I actually spent the next 5 to 10 mins. debating on whether I should eat first & just lie to the staff & tell them that I had eaten before the call. Well, I couldn't do it...spent 10hrs. in the ER before they agreed that the abcess could be excised non-surgically. I could've eaten the food!!! The moral to this story (& I could tell you many stories where the doctors were wrong) is that: 1) YOU know your body & 2) DEMAND a second opinion! Abcesses can be serious! Lastly, I had my ileostomy done after having a 'clean' colonoscopy & no detection on the MRI's or Cat-Scan's. If the drugs don't clear-up your infection within a few days, START SCREAMING! I used to be very timid but this is one area in which I learned to speak-up (25+ yrs. of  frustration!). My apology for rambling redface . Get better & please keep us updated. Thinking of you...
