Nearly every time I ate popcorn from the age of 21 on, I noticed that I would get a pain in the lower right side of my abdomen. So most of my life I avoided popcorn, thinking it was bringing on minor appendicitis attacks.
In 2005, I forgot my lunch to work one day, and went down to the vending machines, bought a bag of popcorn, popped it in the microwave, and ate the whole thing. Eight hours later my husband called an ambulance, and when I got to the hospital, was diagnosed with a perforated small intestine at the ileum, where the valve was 75% scar tissue. All those undigestable popcorn hulls just backed up and tore me to shreds. Ended up with sepsis, and had four operations in three months. Until that day I did not even know I had CD. I was 59 years old at the time.
I know we're not all the same, but my advice to anyone with any intestinal problems would be to never eat popcorn. Consider not eating popcorn to be a small insurance policy to avoid what I and many others have experienced because of it.
