Have never had to resort to Humira, thank God, BUT, I was on Imuran at therapeutic levels but still had some minor symptoms so agreed to a short dose of Entocort EC w/a quick taper. Big mistake! I had PAIN for about
10 days, one trip to ER w/no Dx, another trip to ER the very next night and whilst there the shingles rash FINALLY appeared! I had very little rash, NOTHING like you see the horrible pictures of, but I sure had PAIN! Admitted for pain relief and IV anti-viral then released w/oral antiviral. ALMOST agreed to nerve block to hopefully prevent post herpatic neuralgia. Only the fear of a needle near my spine prevented me from agreeing tho I WAS desperate enough to actually go to the pain clinic and discuss doing so w/the doctor there. I still have some itching along the shingles nerve path on occasion (3 or more ? years later).
Actually, I sort of Dx'd the shingles myself. Whilst in ER the area of pain in the back on the left just at or above the waist line started itching and when I reached back to itch I thought I felt some small "pimples" or bumps. When the nurse came back in I asked her to take a look at it, could it be shingles. She took one look ... and off she went to bring the doctor back. They were just beginning to appear and even the doctor wasn't absolutely positive but was willing to go w/the shingles Dx. By the time they got a hold of my family doctor, etc. (you know how long it can take in ER, especially when a gun shot wound is brought in) the rash was much more apparent and the next doctor who came in to take a look had no question in his mind but that it was definitely shingles.
