Anyone here with a port?

My veins are getting to be terrible to find! My GI mentioned that if they continue to get worse that I may need to get a port. He wasn't really crazy about the idea because of the risk of infection and sorts but said that it was an option if things kept getting worse. Anybody here have one? What was the procedure like for having it placed? Was it painful and is it painful now to be used? Have you had any problems with infections? I would appreciate any answers you may have for me!

i have a hickman catheter, not a port, but same idea.. i use mine for TPN . and antibiotics when needed etc... there are some here who have ports, hopefully they will see this post and respond soon.

I have a good friend with a Port-a-Cath as she had no options left and if I remember correctly she did fine with insertion and I have not heard that she has had any infection.

She has to be hooked up to hyeral every night.

I am sure your physicisn or surgeon would explain the procedure in detail. Take care and good luck.

My daughter had a mediport, double lumen hickman and triple lumen hickman.  The lowest maintenance one was the mediport by far.  It only had to be flushed once a week, you could take showers, swim and not have to worry about infection and daily maintenance of it.  The Hickmans were a ton of work and she would always catch them on things and I would have a heartattack thinking she would pull them out.  Over 4 years she only had one infection and that was with the triple after receiving an infusion of red blood cells because I don't think it was flushed properly.  Go for the mediport if you have to.

I have a Port A Cath because I have terrible veins and I had just staterd Remicade. I think mine was put in back on 2004. I cannot say enough good things about. If I get put in the hospital its so nice having it instead of being poked numerous times only to find no vein that will work. Its done as an outpatient really nothing to it. The surgeon accessed mine because I had Remicade scheduled right after he implanted it. I don't remember really any pain, maybe a little tenderness for a few days but that was it. After awhile you forget you even have it. Susie

i have a port a cath i got it in 2006 after my veins kept blowin they had to put an iv in the top of my foot it blowed a few hours later i told the nurses to get my surgen that i wanted a port a cath i get my remicade throuh it every six weeks they can draw blood through it and when im in the hospital it's so much easier than an iv i have never had any problems out of it as soon as the surgery was over they accesed it i didnt have any pain from it i have never had any problems with infection from it i highly recommened it good luck
