What were the first signs of CD in your child?

I was diagnose with CD last summer. Now my 8-yr-old son is starting to have some weird symptoms. He has had a couple instances of messing in his pants (just a tiny bit) or having immediate diarrhea in the toilet. When I check it is is a small amount, very mucously and even had some blood last time. He had a normal bowel movement in between and hasn't been complaining about any other aches and pains. This is a kid who has ALWAYS been constipated, ever since he was born. He usually goes to the bathroom once every 3 days.

I am hoping and praying that he has not inherited this nasty, disgusting disease from me, but now that this second occurence happened, I'm really worried.

What were the first signs of CD in your children?

I would hope you might have your son see his pediatrician and a GI. My symptoms as a child were alternating constipation and D. My childhood doc had my mom switch to powdered milk, send me to school with tea and crackers, etc.. Twice in my childhood, I had very bad cramping. Of course, once they thought it was appendicitis and couldn't figure out what was wrong. At that time, there were no pediatric GIs and I went undiagnosed for years and years. The mucus and blood in your son's stool worry me a bit. It could be as simple as an allergy. There's been so much advancement in detecting childhood IBD--it's still far from perfect. I hope you can get some answers for your son.

My daughter never had D, but has always tended to be constipated, even in her earliest years.

My son was 11 when he was diagnosed.  He never had any aches and pains and still doesn't (2 years later).  He just started going to the bathroom more frequently and having loose stools.  Then he began to wake up in the middle of the night with loose stools, or sometimes even going in the bed when he was sleeping.

Please take your son to a doctor.  They will probably just start out with a stool sample and a blood test to check his sed rate.  And if those don't warrant further testing at least you can stop worrying about what you should be doing.

Definitly go to a PED GI!!! My daughter was having probs and of course the first thing I tought was that she had gotten this D$%^#@ disease from me! Turns out she did have a problem, but one that could be remedied with a course of meds.

I don't remember the specifics of my stool because I was too young. However, what I do recall was having severe stomach aches accompanied by diarrhea. I also remember that I would be constipated too; I would just sit on the toilet for what seemed like forever. I would get SO hot during both of these episodes that I would have to take off my clothes (again, I was probably about 6 or 7.) Your child is lucky that he has a parent who can recognize the signs and react on them. I wish him the best.

My daughter was 12. Her first symptom that I know of was she said it hurt when she went to the bathroom. I thought hemmies and treated that. A few months later, at a swimming party, she said the clorine really hurt her bottom. I decided to take her to her doctor still thinking it was hemmies. He weighed and measured her and she had lost weight and stopped growing. He asked if she was anorexic. No but she had been more careful with what she ate because of starting middle school. He took a look at her rectum and discovered a fistula. Her pediatrician had a niece with Crohn's so he knew immediately what he was looking at. He sent her to a Pedi-GI and that is how her Crohn's was discovered.

It strange, but both of us found out we had Crohn's because of fistulae. Mine to my bladder.
