So I have a new dr and he seems to think that what was diagnosed as Crohn's last year is ulcerative colitis (it was diagnosed as UC for about 5 years until my bad flare a year and a half ago that put me in the hospital and they have been saying it is Crohn's)

I have been on 6mp, finally finished weaning off pred about a month ago after being on it since Oct, then the other regular multi, calcium, folic acid, etc etc.  I started getting a flare about a month ago but it has been manageable - I am seeing a new dr, whom I love, and he did a colonoscopy last week and found that I did have mild to moderate inflammation, mainly in the rectum and descending colon (which would make it correlate more with UC rather than Crohn's) - but regardless which one it is,

here is my question:

Can Lialda help you achieve remission?

My new dr prescribed it but then I developed a fever so he said to hold off for a while - I am not taking anything new, only the 6mp - can Lialda help stop a flare or do you need pred or flagyl/cipro/etc?  I know it is different with everyone, but I have only been either really sick or not sick at all for the past 2 years and would LOVE to hear anyone's experience with Lialda.

I don't have any personal experience with it, but I read a study that found that Lialda had a significant benefit over the placebo in helping improve colitis. If I can find the link, I will post it. Take care.

Thank you!  The diagnosis is back to good ol' Crohn's colitis.

I have all the symptoms of getting sick but my dr does not want to put me on prednisone or antibiotics unless he has to.  I have only known 2 modes since I was diagnosed, either really sick or totally fine.  So am not sure how being on the RX I am taking now will make me better.  In a way I am happy to have a dr say he doesn't want me to be on prednisone again but I am scared I am going to get very sick again and have to take time out of work, etc etc. 

I would love to hear anyone's experience with Lialda.  My dr has also suggested Remicade but I am afraid to start taking that since once you start you can't stop and from what I understand it can't be used during pregnancy (not a concern at this point)

75 mg 6mp, Lialda, multivitamin, calcium, folic acid

I am on Entocort and have been for a few yrs. I think it may have been June of 06 after a new scope and biopsy UC in the colon, my colon had always been clear. Had small bowel resection in 02. After the UC dx he added Lialda and up until a week ago I had done really well so to speak. I have developed abdominal fistula and started back on Remicade and a round of Flagyl. Now for the past 4-6 months I admit to a poor appetitite and some days I skip eating. Well, I went to bed last Sunday night and knew nothing until my daughter came over and pulled me out of my bed and cleaned me up. I had dry heaves from not eating and a very short round of yellow colored mucous and a fever, not to mention pain in the lower stomach. When I did Remicade it last 4 wks, I think its time for more Remicade cause I am sick. Susie

Well, Lialda works pretty well for me, I have problems here and there with digesting things but I have added lots and lots of fiber so that seems to have helped a lot.  It's definitely nice to only take 4 pills instead of 12 or 16, and the pills don't make my stomach hurt or any bad side effects at all.

The only bad side effect is to my wallet, my insurance has it on the "we will reluctantly pay and charge you huge co-pays" list. ;)

I attended a conference last week in Atlanta that was sponsored by Shire phamacutical (sp) the makers of Lialda. One thing I learned was that Lialda works well for UC. It is slow release and go right to the infected area in the Large intestines before it starts releasing. So it works where it is suppose to work. I hope that you have mich luck with it. From what I could tell it is a great drug for UC.
