Serology 7 test

My son (16yrs) just had blood drawn for this test that gets mailed to the Prometheus lab in CA.  Does anyone know how long it takes to get the results back and if they have been helpful?  My understanding is this test is very accurate, have you heard the same?

I don't recall how long it took, but a few days to a week I think. My Prometheus test showed UC but I have so many Crohn's symptoms (tags, abscess-fistula, etc) that I have a Crohn's DX. Here's a link for more information. Guess the accuracy is 89%.

I believe it took about 2 weeks for my results to come back.  As far as reliability, I don't know, but I've seen the result sheet from one of mine say that they were 98% sure of the results.  There are several different tests that the Promethius lab can do and I've only had one or two of them done, so I don't know if it depends on what they are testing for or not.

The Prometheus tests are pretty accurate. The sensitivity is very good (i.e., if you have a positive test, it's a good indicator of disease) but the specificity is not as good (i.e., if you have a negative test, there is still a chance that the disease is there). It can be very useful in determining whether a person has IBD, and if so, what type is most likely (Crohn's or UC) - it depends on the markers found in the patient's blood. I got my results back pretty quickly, hopefully you will experience the same. Best of luck!

It took me about 10 days to get the results back and it was positive for Crohn's. My doc still wanted to do a colonoscopy to confirm the results by biopsy and to see the extent of the disease.

I would also recommend follow up with this Lab for anyone on 6mp, Imuran and the like at least every 4 months to check your liver tolerance of this class of drugs...they have been very helpful to me identifing me as one of those who can only take a certain dosage of this type of drug before I come toxic. Ergo...dictating my course of therapy for the long haul. Very Pleased! Very Accurate! and Fairly Prompt with Results!

Ok here is the deal. I had a series 6 test done at my local GI's office which came back 98% positive for crohns. I went to see a better GI in Philadelphia and he repeated the Prometheus but the name was changed to series 7 and it came back negative for crohns. I recently seen a Gi at Mt. Saini in NYC and he says that the Prometheus is really not a reliable test as it is only markers of a general population...kinda like the Gallop Polls used in voting. You tel me why it came nack positive the first time and negative the second time? Remember that Prometheus Labs owns the rights to the drug Entercort which is used in the treatment of IBD. If you owned the rights would you not want the test to be more positive as to sell more drugs? If you want I can list all the markers that came back both positive and negative on both tests. Kinda funny how they changed overa 6 month time period.......

I too recently had this test, was quick to receive results.  I, however, am headed for my third colonoscopy in a little over 6 months...since "there were no clear markers/flags to indicate crohns, but the previous biopsies did find colitis with possibilities of crohns"....i just don't know...we'll see after this colonoscopy i'm going to have this morning....wish me luck!  good luck to all of you, and I hope that this blood test can show what needs to be found to help you all the most...oh, i've got it in rectum, two spots in colon & two spots in terminal ileum, and just beyond (intestinal)....i had always thought this was crohn's....guess not...we shall see if i'm just being procedured to death........

Good Luck with the proceedure this morning. Does the doctor tell you the results before you go home or do you have to wait?

Just got a call from the doctor. The Serology 7 test results are in, apparently the test is 98% accurate. My son, 16 years, falls in the 84% range for Crohns according to the test. The nurse felt this was high and the likelihood of Crohns is fairly certain. He goes for an upper GI on Tuesday and then a colonoscopy, but that is not scheduled yet. I haven't seen the results but it sounds like they test for several markers.

My daughter had the serology7 test and the GI doc said her markers came out high for crohns, but i haven't seen the results yet.  Just had another endoscopy and am waiting for the biopsy results.  Everything else came out poss. crohns but not a definite diagnosis.

The test checks several things. The parts of the test that are looking for a specific gene do not depend on your disease being active; you'll have the gene whether or not you are currently experiencing symptoms. The other parts, however, are looking for indicators of an active inflammatory response, i.e., active Crohn's symtoms. So unless you currently have active disease (or some sort of active inflmmatory response), only the genetic marker portions will come back as positive.

They say it is something like 80-90% accurate.

I had high antibody titers for OmpT and Cbir1, especially the latter, and was (+) for Crohn's.

I am becoming a little skeptical. Because...

I have gotten a few UTI's, and from reading the scientific literature, it appears some of the same antigens picked up by Serology 7 are also present in uropathogenic bacteria (flagellin aka Cbir1, and Omp proteins). Recurrent UTI's cause a person to make antibodies. So I am wondering if my high antibody titers could be due, at least in part, to making those antibodies during recurrent UTIs, and having a terrible UTI a couple months before being tested.

I had an off the chart crohns positive serology. Something like 300%. But a few months later I ended up w/ e-coli. I wondered if I had e-coli at the time if it would have thrown off my results. Although, I most likely did not have e-coli then.

This test is really not reliable. I had a positive (98% suggestive for crohns) using the serology 6 test, a year later I had the serology 7 test and it came back negative for crohns. You tell me what is wrong with the test?

i just came from a second opinion gastro appt. and he said the test is only 30% accurate for crohn's??? is that true?? he said it's more of a test for UC not crohn's...also said people without crohn's often test positive in the serology 7...can anyone out there confirm?

well, I think from the varying responses to this question, the test is somewhat controversial. On their website and in the literature, they say the ASCA and similar serology 7 tests are highly accurate. My colonoscopies and biopsies have not shown crohn's, just garden variety colitis or possibly diverticular colitis. My doctor thought if you have other auto immune issues, the tests might show a false positive. My IgG ASCA was positive.

Does anyone know if being on Prednisone will adversely affect the IBD Serology from Prometheus?

It should not. I would call the GI's office and ask. Also, not all insurance companies will pay for this expensive lab test. Might want to check. I know Aetna doesn't cover it. Thanks for the welcome. Just found you guys on line while researching this overwhelmingly confusing process of my 15 yr old being diagnosed. I'm sure there will be more questions! :)
