It's good to hear that it's going alright.
Still, I wouldn't recommend what you're doing. I could understand why you first thought about it, but after hearing all the responses, it's hard to believe you would take the risk.
I was diagnosed with Crohn's in June 2005, a week after I turned 20. From March - August I had went from 155 pounds, down to 108. Prednisone was the second med I tried (after Pentasa didn't work). They started me on 40 mg in August. Every time they tried to wean me off I would start having problems. I was only supposed to be on the for about 5 months. My schedule towards the end was 10 mg for 2 weeks, then 7.5 for 2 weeks, then alternate between 7.5 and 5 every other day for 2 weeks, then 5 for 2 weeks, then alternate between 5 and 2.5 for 2 weeks, then down to 2.5 for the final 2 weeks.
When I was on 5 mg I noticed some muscle weakness and slight joint pain in my legs(around December 20th). I ignored it for a few days. By the 24th I was alternating between 5 and 2.5 and started having trouble standing for more than 10 minutes. The night of the 25th my ankles had become so swollen that I couldn't even stand up without pain. I had to call my dad from my driveway to ask for help walking about 20 feet from my car to the house door.
I was freaked out and went to the hospital the next day. My uncle carried me to the car. Afetr receiving steroids, painkillers, and anti-inflammatory meds through an IV the pain barely decreased. My GI increased the pred to 30mg after that. I used a wheelchair to move around the house for the next 4-5 days because I could stand w/o holding on to something. I would get an average of about 2 hours of sleep/night because I was in such pain.
Prednisone worked great while I was on it. I gained back all the weight. I'm currently 165 pounds and have been off prednisone for about 10 months (I was on it for about 22 months). It's a horrible drug though, and I personally wouldn't mess with it.
