colonoscopy prep question

So, I'm going for colonscopy #6 and my doc is letting me do the magnesium citrate b/c I have a hard time with drinks. My question is this: why aren't we allowed to drink water after midnight?

I'm going in dehydrated, anemic, with teeny scarred veins. How is this anesthesiologist supposed to get into my veins. For every blood test I do, they insist I drink water the night before, day of, and before they prick me. Today they had to use my wrist (side near thumb).

I was allowed to liquids  up until 6 hours prior to the test and I was still dehydrated and they had a hard time hitting the vein. I got a pediatric needle and bam they got it right away. maybe others will have some more insight for you. I had a nurse tell me no one drinks enough when they can during the prep and most are dehydrated. I think she may have been trying to make me feel better though. Karen

I will tell you need to have an empty stomach because they don't want you be sick during the test. As for your veins that isn't a problem either the people that insert them are very experience at doing this for people with small veins.

I know that my veins are not good either and I get a PICC line done if they are going to do a number of tests or procedures.

They don't want you to vomit during the procedure and aspirate it.
Last year, a lady here drank coffee the morning of her operation and died because she vomited during her surgery and breathed it in.

When I had my scope, I wasn't allowed to drink after 7am (my scope happened around 1pm). Even though I could drink until 7, they had a hard time getting my IV in. If I need a scope again I'm going to ask for them to put the IV in the day before during my pre-op visit - maybe that's something you can try?

Most of the time the CRNA will start your IV and they do these all day long under the most stressful situations in O.R. so have faith.  Leave the worrying to them and just know once the IV is in you get the meds to help you relax and tolerate the scope.

You will do wonderful.  It is the unknown that is scary.

I've found that different doctors have different rules.  I always question it when they say nothing after midnight.  How can the same rule apply for a 7am procedure and a 1pm procedure. 

I make them pin down exactly how many hours before MY scheduled procedure I have to stop eating and drinking.  They usually try to tell me that since I'm asleep after midnight, what difference does it make.  I still want to know if I can have a drink of water at 3am if I want it.

For my last scope (both ends) I was not allowed any water 4 hours before the procedure.  That big glass of water at 4am really made the whole day better.
