Has anyone gained weight from Asacol?

Hi everybody! 

I have been taking Asacol for almost 2 months now. From the minute I started it, I have been gaining wieght at an alarming rate, Over 10 pounds in 2 months.  At 5'0" thats allot of weight.  I feel bloated all the time. I have a salty taste in my mouth too.  I know some of the weight must be water retention but ever since I've been taking the Asacol, I feel hungry all the time.  Has anyone else ever had this experience with Asacol?

I took asacol when I was first diagnosed and I don't remember gaining a lot of weight.....but I'm sure it could be possible. Do you take anything else? I know prednisone can cause those symptoms. I hope you can figure something out soon!

I have been on Asacol for over 2 years and have gained NO weight from it at all. I have a little hairloss, but no weight gain. Could be you are feeling better and maybe eating more? Just a thought.

Oh wow, no. I don't have the easiest time losing weight. But I've been on it 2 years as well and I don't gain on it. I was going ask the same as Nanners, maybe your feeling better and eating more normally?

Well I think I got my answer!  eyes   I've just been eating more!  I just talked to my GI doc on the phone and he said that It's a good sign. I have been feeling a little better. I have always been  physically active but for the last several months I have vegged allot.  I was just diagnosed with arthritis in my spine.  Now I am searching for a ruematologist!  What next?  I guess I better dust off my bike!  Thank you everyone for your feed back, it made me have to hold myself accountable for the junk I've been putting in my mouth! LOL!

I am newly diagnosed and I just started taking Asacol one week ago. I too have been hungry all of the time since I started taking it.

I recently got out of the hospital for two resections and lost 30 pounds in the last two months due to what I now know is my chrones problem. After the surgery and prior to starting this medicine, I really had no appetite and was grazing. I really don't want to gain the weight back, as it's really the only good thing that's come out of this nightmare. I'm going to talk to my GI this week about it.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one though. =)

Thank you Flem!  smurf I knew it wasn't my imagination.  I don't know why it has made me hungry all the time but it has.  I'm not sure if its because my digestion is working better or if it upsets my stomach.  I also feel that it is causing me to retain allot of fluids.  Part of the weight gain is fat and part is allot of fluids.  I feel bloated like a cow.  The GI-Doc says My appetite improvement is a good sign but I'm with you!  I don't like it!   Do you feel like you are retaining allot of water since you have been on it?  I have had a salty taste in my mouth too, have you had that?

The prescribing information for Asacol lists the following side effects among others. Note the ones that I have put in bold.
Body as a Whole: Neck pain, facial edema, edema, lupus-like syndrome, drug fever (rare).
Gastrointestinal: Anorexia, pancreatitis, gastritis, increased appetite, cholecystitis, dry mouth,
oral ulcers, perforated peptic ulcer (rare), bloody diarrhea.

I didn't see that on the side effects list I got from the drug store with Rx.

I will talk to my GI- Doc again, He said there are other meds available.

I have just been diagnosed with arthritis in my spine. 

I don't know what Kind it is yet I'm looking for a Rheumatologist. 

My hands ache when I grip anything. I think it might be rheumatoid. 

Thanks again, I knew I didn't turn into a porker over night for nothing!

Well I did some looking around and I discovered that I'm not the only one that has had this happen.  I have been getting headaches, hair loss, weight gain, dizzy, tired, fatigue, salty taste and aching joints.  Asacol is related to Sulfasalazine and I had a severe reaction to Sulfasalazine, I thought I was going to die!  I found a site where people  tell of the side effects that they have experienced.  I'm not alone!
