4 year old with Crohn's?

My grandaughter was running around with her cousins 2 months ago but now all of a sudden she can't even stand let alone walk.

At first our Doctor had us take her to a Juvenile Rheumatoligist  to check for arthriis. Her knees, ankles. and one elbow were all affected but after extensive blood tests the Doctors now want her taken to  GI because she suspects either Crohn's or Ulcertive Colitis.

She doesn't have  diarrhea, but has very poor appetite.

Are these diseases common in 4 year olds?

These diseases are all new to me, and I would appreciate any input someone may have.

sorry about your 4yr.old--can't really give any advice on that age ''other then''check with a gi for sure--so sorry hope all works out.

I'm not an expert, but if I remember right, Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis are not common in four year olds...

The disease usually strikes in adolescence and on up. However, it is NOT unheard of for someone as young as four (or even younger) to have Crohn's or UC. I really hope your daughter does not have it...

There's a lot of information available for you to look at regarding these diseases... One good spot is the CCFA.org...

In the 4+ years I have been a member here at Healing Well, I have seen an increase in the number of parents coming here with young children diagnosed with Crohn's disease. While age 4 is young to be diagnosed, we have had children as young as 18 months old. I hope that your granddaughter does not have CD or UC. There are many, many members here that lead productive, active lives while living with this chronic condition.

I have mild Crohn's in my intestines [now in remission] but severe and active arthritis associated with the CD. Your granddaughter has a smart rheumatologist! Sending her to look for the root cause of her arthritic problem is the right plan in my opinion. Good luck to your family. Please let us know what happens.

Hi Papaof10 Sure hope your little one doesn't have IBD are there others in her family that do? Hope things go good for her at the GI's and keep in touch. lol gail

Unfortunately, I know a 6 year old with CD.  It is one thing when it is you but another to watch a child having to deal with it.  My thoughts and well wishes are always here.

The DragonPack IBD forum is for families of children with ibd. Just google it. They will be able to help you as well. Some of the members have very young children with IBD so they will be a source of support and knowledge if it turns out Crohn's or UC is her diagnosis.

Hope your granddaughter feels better soon.

One of my good friends was diagnosed with Crohn's as a young child. Though it's unfortunate to be diagnosed at any age, particularly an extremely young one, my friend is somewhat glad (in the scope of things of course) to have had the worst of it at a young age. At that time, parents can strictly control the diet and reinforce eating habits which may take care of the symptoms altogether, particularly in mild cases. While she still technically has Crohn's, she is symptom free and not on any medication.

I hope they figure out the problem and your granddaughter is up and running around again! It's incredibly unfortunate that a four year old would have to deal with any medical issue, particularly this one.

So sorry about your granddaughter.  My daughter was diagnosised when she was eight but I know that her symptoms went back to birth and really started to show theirself when she was five and it took many drs and many trips to er and hospital stays to get a final diagnosis.  Good news, I was told that sometimes when they get this young they grow out of it during puberty.  So I am the only parent praying for early puberty.  The bowel symptoms are calming down after two years but she has severe joint pain, high sed rate and tiredness and she has learned to cope the best a ten year old can.  but I agree with the person that told you that you have a good rheumatologist to keep digging for the cause.  Please keep us posted.

Hi.. My son was diagnose with crohns at 7 he is now 9.. but there are a lot of little kids ages 18 month up with either Crohns or ulcerative colitis.. you can go to this web side which is for parents wiith kids with crohns or ulcerative.. and you will have a better view and understanding

I use that one and is the best website for parents.. you will read all cases and the people are very helpful..

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond with comments.

My  grandaughter will be seeing a GI monday 6-23-08 and I will post whatever the results are.
