i did some research on this i was recenty dis with kidney stones and i see that it is common in inflamorty bowel disorders i was just wanding if anyone has them here and if they passed on there own or if had to go another route to get rid of them any help would be appercitated i am feeling very alone right now on everything ty in advance

You are definitely not alone!  Lots of us have/have had them.  I have had so many, I have lost count!  Mine are due to resections/poor absorption and I actually deal with a stone specialist now (my urologist referred me).  I have passed many on my own (especially the smaller ones) and also had some retrieved and blasted (lithotripsy). I have passed many small ones that were totally painless and then those that were totally awful.  The pain is the worst imaginable when it is at its worst.   Childbirth was much easier in my opinion than my worst stones.   Take your pain meds at the first sign of distress (it is harder to get the pain under control if you wait until it is extremely bad) and drink as much as you can.  Good luck!

Hi doormouse, I too get them and some reasons are the same as pattytx, two resections and is related to crohns ( isnt everything?) and also hereditary.  I have had 3 9mm and one 7mm.  I didnt know they were that big, but had lithotripsy and that was the worse pain, (other than a total bowel obstruction) known to man.  I got flown to Winnipeg and had it done 3 different times.  They say, calcium, and some combos with calcium in water and green tea is a bad mix.  I have a RO tap now or drink RO bottled water on the run.  The most important thing is to drink alot of water.  I have used a natural supplement, but I stopped, it is called Chanca piedra.  Dont know if it is effective.  No one is alone with this disease, we are  here to help because outsiders dont know our pain, litterally!  Take care,  hang in there, drink lots of water! yeah

thanks for the surrport  i have really been feeling bad and the statement made about dosnt everything relate to chrons isnt that the truth lol  the other part of this is i was dig though the er and i havnt made a follow up apt i am sick of docs only went to the er cause i couldnt take the pain and they gave me pain meds but im out and over the counter meds dont help

hey doormouse!  i used to get kidney stones on a frequent basis in my early-mid twenties (probably because I ate terribly, went out drinking frequently and never drank WATER :). 

I had some success with the lifestyle changes the doctor suggested in order to avoid more stones.  One big thing that makes stones popular with IBD patients is dehydration. If you're not getting enough water thru your kidneys, minerals (mostly calcium) will build up and give you stones.  And it's summer so we sweat our water instead of it going thru our kidneys, so that may be hindering you too.  Drink lemonade and lots of water, avoid salt and meat.  And alcohol is a big no-no for kidney stone sufferers too.

I've cranked out a few, and I know my uncle does too, so some of it is probably heredity.
I was also told that Prednisone does a pretty good job of eating the calcium out of your bones and flushing it through the kidneys, so if you are on prednisone, drink a lot of water. If you have been on prednisone, could be something to watch out for. I get bone density scans ever now and then since the pred. caused some osteopenia (early stage osteoporosis)
The urologist and rhuematologist put me on a low dose diuretic to keep my kidneys flushed out. So far it has seemed to work since I haven't had a kidney stone in a few years. Like everyone else said, drink a LOT of water and keep them flushed out while they are small. Passing them sucks, and few can understand the pain.bv

My son just got blasted for his first stone 5mm last week. Tea and dehydration was most likely his culprit.
2 er visits before the referral to the urologist came, morphine at the er, lame hydrcodone and phenergren to get him through it. Finally gave him some percocet, whoppee, like that was going to touch the pain, this week after surgery. It's been a week and a half now and he's just beginning to feel better. Hope you are feeling better soon and I would call a urologist and try and get in without a referral.

Ahhh, Kidney stones......

I've had them since highschool, 6 eswl's and several basket removals. In fact I just had a 6-7 mm stone blasted on Tuesday on the left side and now I'm having the right side blasted on July 8th. Mine is a combo of genetics and the cd. It seems worse after the resection.

They always tell you to drink lots of water to keep your kidneys flushed out. Also I heard that taking Biotin can make them worse....Donno about that.

My Bane! Between myself & Sniper, we've produced enough to cover an entire driveway! Hopefully, this year will be different. The last 5 summers, its been multiple stones. I hate the bloody things worse than my CD, if that is possible.

I've had a couple one was treated with lithotripsy and i still have a small one not causing any problems at the moment. Tech Chick you have me wondering because i take biotin.

I've had them also.... boy!talk about painful. But I passed them on my own(with painkillers , lots of crying, and complaining). I've luckily only had them once. Good luck. I sure hope you are feeling better soon. Love and prayers.

I recently got a urinalysis when I had pain in my kidney area, and it indicated I might have them: uric acid crystals in the urine.  I promptly started drinking 2 quarts of water a day and the pain has not returned.  I'm supposed to get an ultrasound but have not done it yet.  General info:  http://www.urologychannel.com/kidneystones/index.shtml

you might want to get them analyzed after they pass to see what their composition is.  if it's mostly calcium, it could be due to your medicines, as other people suggested.

I know drinking a lot of tea will contribute to forming of stones...but I wonder if that goes for green tea as well?

Actually, so far all is quiet on the Kidney Front. Could I finaly get a summer to call my own? Please pray for me guys, I'm tired of the same old thing every bloody summer!

I absolutely HATE kidney stones. They are certainly as bad as giving birth or possibly worse. I have passed big ones and little ones and it is all bad no matter what. It seems to me that every two or three years I get a big bad one. I know I am nearly due for one again and I dread it so much. I always drink a ton of water too, so I know I am not dehydrated. A specialist once told me that drinking lemonade daily could help in the prevention of stones. Have any of you heard of or tried that? Lemonade makes me feel so bloated that I have not been able to do it daily.

Hi all .just wantedto get my 2 cents in.I had my encounter with kidney stones last year.had to have it removed.My urologist told me to drink lots of water,also to drink water with the juice of fresh lemons in it(2 lemons for 2 litres of water).i will be going for a follow up scan next month to check on things.
