I just went out for a walk and was petting a very friendly neighborhood cat when it suddenly turned around and bit my hand. I washed it and rinsed with hydrogen peroxide. I looked up some info. on websites and found out that a large percentage of cat bites get infected. One of the warnings pertained to the use of immunosuppressants. Should I be concerned if I am taking 6MP?

You should consult your primary care physician and follow their advice. We non-professionalt types here really should not be advising on such an issue. In the meantime, if the bite shows signs of infection you should go to your local urgent care facility. Sorry not to be of more help.

My own cat bit me a few weeks back. It got very red, painful and hot. I did have to take antibiotics and it cleared up right away. The cat has bitten me before with no infection. I am not sure why it happened this time. I am on Asacol and Humira.

Another concern would be rabies.

Probably a good idea to ask your neighbors if the cat is up-to-date on its vaccines.

In addition, the entire web link above (even for adults) has good info regarding cat bites, especially since you're immunosupressed.

singing Cat scratch fever....If you are really worried about it then call a doctor. Personally, I would put a bandaid with Neosporin on it.

In my experience, cats are much more likely to bite than dogs.  It wouldn't hurt to check it out, but rabies is definitely not the only reason an otherwise friendly cat might bite.

My cat bit me (she was terrified at the vet's office) and I was fine. The bite was on the back of my hand and not very deep. The vet cautioned me that, especially since I was on immune-suppressants, I might want to go straight to the doctor and get antibiotics. I didn't because it didn't seem that bad. It never got infected. However, I also have a friend whose husband's finger got infected within 24 hours and they had to admit him to ER! (He is *not* on any immune suppressors!) Perhaps I was lucky... they are not to be fooled around with!

You should also rub the area with extra virgine olive oil, it's an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal...do this 2 times a day and in a couple of days you should notice it healing quickly, it got rid of my bug bites with only a mild itch on one of them which was quickly relieved as soon as I applied the EVOO.

The cat may have wanted some olive oil on a certain part of its anatomy too. This would make things slide better because if it bit me I would definitely put my boot up his ,,,,aaaaaah, well you get the picture..

Great...my daughter just brought a psycho cat into our house! My husband stepped out of the shower this evening and the cat came running in the bedroom, catapolted to the wing back chair like she had velcro on her feet, took a flying leap for the top of the blinds, slid down them and ran to the edge of the bed. Turned, looked at my husband directly, while he was standing in the nude, kindly raised her paw and let out a major hisssss and gut growl at him! Wonder what she was gonna bite!!!! :)

Pb4- I didn't know that about the EVOO...thanks for the tip...my husband may need it! (ROFL)!

If you are on, or have been on recently, Prednisone the cut may not heal quickly. I have a scratch on my wrist from my very friendly cat that is still very noticeable after 4 weeks. It wasn't deep and didn't get infected, it just didn't heal well. I agree, since you don't know the cat and don't know its history, a call and perhaps a visit to your PCP in the morning is what I would do.

People have lost limbs after cat bites that they ignored. You need immediate medical attention before it starts to show signs of infection. At least call you PCP or if its after hours go to urgent care.

Well, domestic pets, specially cats, could transmit toxoplasmosis, in a person who is in use of imunossupressant this means that your imune system is lower than normal, you could get easier, I would see a doctor if I were you.
