Is it possible to buy lactose-free, dairy-based ice cream in Australia?

I know we can get So Good soy-based ice-cream, but I've just discovered that I can tolerate lactose-free dairy yoghurt. I hoped to find something lactose-free and dairy-based in the ice-cream section, but spent half an hour searching the freezers at Woolies / Safeway and couldn't find anything.

I don't mind the So Good; it's nice; I just wanted to see if I could tolerate something other than the yoghurt. And I felt like a treat . Is there a lactose-free, dairy-based brand available? If so, where? Coles? Aldi? IGA?

Liddells (an Ozzie Co.) now make lactose free thickened cream so you could try to make your own. Their milk is great and I can't wait  until the yoghurt is imported into NZ. Info is on their website

We have Liddels lactose-free yoghurt here, and I think it's much nicer (though fattier) than the Vaalia stuff. Great to know that there's cream coming! Thanks so much! If I could get cream, I'd be able to make my own ice cream, wouldn't I? (Thanks, Jo, I have recipes here too, and there's always the 'net).

Jo, there's no mobile ice cream van here. I don't know if it's because I live in the country and you live in the city, or because home delivery is still more commonplace in NSW than elsewhere. My grandfather lives in NSW and he still has a milkman!!! I haven't seen one down here *ever*.

Thanks for the enquiry, Jo. My brain is starting to recover a little, but I still find that I can only concentrate for very short periods. I'm certain it's a medical thing - medications? fibro? something else?

My grandparents used to get delivered ice cream and I know what you mean - nicht sehr gut.

Hey, I'll swap you our weather and then none of you will be needing any ice cream at all. I know we need the rain, but ENOUGH already! I can't get the laundry dry, and we're all getting sick of being wakened at 4am, terrified that the roof will blow off. It's been going on for 2 - 3 weeks now.

Will you be able to keep working while the kids are on hols, or are you taking time off?

You should see the ocean here! Huge waves right out the the horizon. Very spectacular, though a bit scary.

We're not really meant to do OT chatter on the forums (my fault; I started it), so how's your health, Jo?

Crohn's-wise, improving (slowly) but not completely right yet.

Everything else is a bit hard - I have so little energy. Am slowly crawling out of a brain fog that has lasted for months. I can now read so I *suppose* that's a small improvement, but I still can't cope with anything much harder than teen fiction.

The gp said that because I've been so sick for so long, it could be at least another year before I begin to feel halfway normal. I think that's good news, because I was worrying that this might be as good as I'll ever get!

PS. Re your earlier comment, does that mean that your health is still very unstable, despite the surgery?

I think my CD is under control at the moment, its my AS that is acting up now, anyway, you are spoiling my whinge letter to you haha
You soung like me if its not the CD its something else holding us back from 'wellness'.

I got the berry sorbet I think but it was very sweet. They are the only brands I can find in the freezer that dont have dairy, lactose and the sugar isnt tooooooo bad. I get them as my partner loves ice cream and when he is eating it sometimes I cannot resist so will have my sorbet haha
Also I am trying to eat better to lose some kilos and on the days I do ok, at night need something sweet.

I’m sorry, didn’t get my notifications emailed to me after I subscribed to this thread!
I’m doing pretty well, on and off I guess, I saw the specialist last week and he thinks my crohn’s might have ‘spread’ to my small intestine (I’ve been having obstruction symptoms, intense bloating and discomfort) … so there is a possibility I’ll have to do another colonoscopy and then a pill camera… problem is I start a new *dream* job in a couple of weeks and I won’t have leave to take to see the specialist … might just take an afternoon or something.

At the moment I’m cursing the Brisbane rain and trying to dry my washing – driving down to NSW to visit my parents tomorrow – long overdue, I haven’t seen them since Easter! Always seems to be raining when i visit though! And then they will come back and visit up in bris for a few days. Really looking forward to it, I’ve been enjoying this little break between jobs!

Phoebe, I'm really sorry to hear that your disease is spreading, especially as you have a dream job lined up. Don't let them pressure you into ignoring your illness, though - that can lead to obstructions, surgery etc etc etc, as I'm sure you know. I think it's in their best interest to leet you keep seeing your doctor and receiving treatment so that you can keep working and not have to take extended sick leave! (Sorry for the growl, but I feel a bit defensive on your behalf).
