Yesterday was a horrible day for me with diarrhea. I have diarrhea every day multiple times a day, but yesterday it just wouldn't let up. I wasn't able to go to sleep til almost 6am. And to top it off I started bleeding again. UGH! Here I am now...I've been awake for about an hour...and it's back and even worse! I almost didn't make it to the bathroom the last time. I just don't know what to do. The bleeding has calmed down, but not the diarrhea. I don't know if I can take another day like this. I just seem to be getting worse and worse as the days go by. Any suggestions? I've been to the ER twice in like 2 weeks for the bleeding and for the dehydration. I've been drinking stuff with electrolytes like the ER suggested, but it runs right through me. I don't think the ER will do anything other than give me an IV and send me on my way. Should I call the GI? I've only been there once and I have my colonoscopy scheduled for July 31. I don't like immodium because it usually makes me feel worse plus in order to get it to even work I have to take a bunch of it...not more than what they recommend though...I don't want you to think I'm overdosing on immodium or anything. This has just been so draining on me...I can't leave the house...I've run to the bathroom twice while typing this...I'm just fed up! It won't let up and like I said it just keeps getting worse! Don't even get me started on the cramping too. sad Please help!

I'm so sorry you have to go through this Clos! I've been through it before, and am experiencing it to a lesser degree myself at this very moment.

In my unprofessional opinion, it sounds as though you need to be actually formally admitted into the hospital, NOT the stupid ER. You need a bed of your own, and a few days of liquids pumped into your veins. That not only rehydrates you, but it gives your body a chance to recover, and it gives your bowels a break. Whenever I got to the point where you are, I was always admitted. I viewed it as a twisted mini-holiday that you pay for, but that is ultimately worth it. If you don't break this cycle, things could spiral out of control before you make it in for your colonoscopy.

That being said, the only relief I find when I am doing so poorly is to spend as much time in a hot bath as on the toilet. The warm water relaxes the muscles in my abdomen, calms down my bowels, and just helps me in general on a mental level I think. Sometimes an electric heating pad on my crampy abdomen helps a bit too.

I wish I had better news, but it really does sound like you need to get your GI to admit you.

Really sorry to hear your feeling so bad. (((HUGGY)))

Wish I had some really insightful suggestions but I don't. Uhm ... "Don't chugg the Gotorade" is about the best I can come up with. Drink a mouth full at a time, if you finish a bottle in less than 2 hours your probably drinking too fast. Same with food. Probably read that advice around here somewhere ...

I called my GI and his nurse had no idea what to do with me. She agreed to talk to one of the docs at least and she said she'd call me back...I guess that's a start. The diarrhea has calmed down a bit, but I just ate a little while ago so I'm sure it's going to start back up again. I don't know what I'm going to do if they tell me to just go to the ER. I really don't think sitting in a room full of possibly contagious people for hours is going to help me when all they've done in the past is tell me to wait for my colonoscopy and send me on my way. The last thing I need is yet another illness right now regardless of it's a little cold or the flu.

well I heard back from the GI doc's office. all they can think of is for me to do a stool sample. I have to pick up the paperwork and stuff tomorrow. I asked for tips or something to at least relieve my symptoms and nothing. so I wait. blah.

see if you can have codeine phosphate prescribed, works well for me, drink and eat little a lot

Closure, can i just say that I am tired of people telling me to do a stool sample? they never find anything! seriously, i hope you have better luck than me. and i know that ER visits suck and I don't enjoy them either, but a couple days rest inpatient always makes me feel better. for a while. gee, i'm not helpful. good luck! and hugs!

Closure--I agree that a doc really needs to see you. In the meantime, perhaps you can bring your diet down to lots of clear, sweet, and warm liquids. Chix broth, gatorade/powerade, boulliion, apple juice, white grape juice, tea with honey, lollipops, popsicles and lemon ice if the cold doesn't bother you. Try the immodium too if your doc has suggested it. It works wonders for me. After a day or two of liquids, then try soaking your break or crackers in the broth and adding soft foods. This is what I usually do when I can't kick the D. I do hope you see a doc soon.

Lavender - I used to feel the same way as you until in one flare they found an e-coli like bacteria in my stool that got sent to the CDC in Atlanta. I now have famous poop I guess.

I have to agree with the others on here - I've never had anything useful show up from a stool sample, but there is always a first I guess. I never realized how spoiled I was having a good doctor until I had to move and begin the hunt for another one. If I reached the condition that you are in Closure, all I had to do was call him and tell him that I was dehydrated and that I was past the point where I could turn myself around and BAM! He had my orders sent, and by the time I got to the inpatient admitting of the hospital my bed was ready and the only people I had to deal with were the nurses that would help me get settled. Going to the ER is, indeed, usually pointless, but did you ask your doc about being admitted as a regular patient for a day or two? You shouldn't even have to go NEAR the ER if he would just agree to formally admit you to the hospital and give you a day or two of IV fluids so that your body could recover!

Still running to the bathroom. UGH! Anyway, I've also had stool samples before...not a thing showed up. So I'll humor them anyway. It's not like I have to pay for it and I've got plenty of well...you know...to spare for a test lol. The nurse I talked to really had no clue what to do with me. She was silent for like 5 min. So I would just ramble on about how the immodium works, or doesn't work, how I've been to the ER, maybe I should be admitted, is there anything they can give me to help the diarrhea, etc. She rarely responded and then she just said she would talk to a doc. She did and we know how that ended up. thanks to everyone that responded and I'll give that website about that med a look over. *hugs*

My butt start at about 9am, when silly me, drunk couple quarts of water for a urine test. Yeah that didn't work and I've been going ever since. Still not sure how I'm going to fill this stupid little jar!

It really sounds like you need to be admitted into the hospital. You sound in pretty bad shape, blood and constant debilitating D, and cramps sounds pretty much like how my husband felt - he was in a lot of pain, and the D was all blood, and he was dehydrated, even though he'd been chugging gatorade. When I took him to the ER, there was no question about sending him home - they got him on an IV and some pain meds, and the resident gastroenterologist took a look at his chart, and admitted him to the hospital right away, and put him on a clear liquid diet, with peripheral parenteral nutrition to keep his calorie count around 1500Kcal a day. Also, once they found out he had crohn's, they started him on 120mgs of IV solumedrol, and also on Remicade.

You need to be in the hospital getting better, and giving your bowels some rest, and getting some powerful medication to stop this flare. Maybe your gastroenterologist can get you admitted to the hospital where he or his fellow partners may be visiting doctors at, without you having to go through the ER. But to me, it really does sound like the hospital is where you need to be right now. It really sounds like you need nutritional support and some powerful meds right now.

thanks guys. I'm doing a little better with the diarrhea...and the bleeding has let up for the most part. now on top of everything else I found a large lump behind my left ear. almost the size of a half dollar. I never noticed it before, not that I feel behind my ears all the time, so for some unknown reason today I touched behind my ear and felt it. it's pretty hard almost like bone. well I went to my quack of a family doc and she doesn't really know what it is and of course didn't investigate. told me she *thinks* it's a swollen lymph node, but since it's only on one side she doesn't know what caused it. she said it could mean there's an infection in my body or whatever, but again since it's only on one side it's strange. she said that she would assume that there was something wrong on that side of my head and that's what would cause the possible lymph node to swell, but she said I would've noticed something by now...besides the lump. then she pushed on it really hard and I guess it gave a little, meaning it wasn't rock solid, but like I said it's pretty hard. now I'm in even more pain than before. I have TMJ so I just assumed that's what the pain on the side of my neck and jaw was from, but when she was pushing on it that's exactly where the pain shot through. she told me to wait 3 friggen weeks and if it's still there to come back and then she'll investigate. I have no idea how long I've had it. I didn't get bumped or injured in any way to cause it. I asked if the possible crohns could cause something like this and she said her famous phrase..."I'm not sure". She said obviously crohns affects most of your body, but she couldn't say for sure if this could be related. it's so big my glasses don't fit properly so now I'm getting a migraine and have pain behind my left eye probably from strain since my vision isn't right because of the glasses sitting crooked. anyone heard of anything like this? don't know if it's crohns related or not, but I thought I should post this and see if anyone had any ideas. my aunt I guess when she was a teen had a similar thing...we don't know for sure if it's the same because she doesn't live in this state...just going by descriptions...anyway for her it was a cyst and needed to be removed. I don't know...I guess I just wait it out and hope it doesn't get bigger than my head in 3 weeks time. I've been trying to switch family docs, but haven't had the best of luck. oh...did my stool sample today too. fun, fun!

Closure you sure are having a bad time, arent you!!! I am so sorry you are feeling so bad.

So did the doctor do anything other than stool sample for your D? Give you anything to help? If this keeps up, I would go ahead and go to the ER. If this keeps up your going to get really dehydrated, and thats no fun either. Good luck and keep us posted on how your doing.

nope...nothing else other than the stool sample. nothing to relieve my symptoms at all. I guess I'm just going to stick to my gatorade and hope for the best.

I can't believe the doctor who saw you for the cyst didn't see what bad shape you were in and give you an IV or something. My primary will treat my crohns when my GI isn't around or if I just get in there faster.

Hi Closure I too hope your lump don't get bigger then your head we sure have fun at times trying to figure out our body problems .Hope it soon goes down. Your still having lots of D are you? Hoping it will let up soon. lol gail

thanks guys *hugs* I just wish someone had answers for me. I'm going to call my family doc again tomorrow and really plead my case for blood work. I mean it would be good to know my blood cell counts. Not only for this, but to help get a diagnosis for all this other stuff I'm dealing with. if she won't do it I'm thinking of calling the GI doc and explaining to them what's going on and see if they'll do the blood work for me.

I am so sorry to hear that.Why dont you try the to change the diet abosoutly no sugar in your food even gatorade has some sugar in it so please follow this strictly no carbo hydates absolutly no mil products (NO NO TO DAIRY any thing) no wheat products.

Just grilled food would be fine chicken soup grilled fish grilled chicken with no sause please be care full when u add sause see no sugar in it

thanks guys. I'm still doing pretty bad. the bleeding started up again last night, but it's not as bad as it's been. just not feeling right. crampy, my butt hurts from going to the bathroom so much the past two days, tired. I haven't heard anything yet on my stool sample. my family doc wouldn't do the bloodwork even though I tried my best to plead with her over the phone. still have the lump, not any bigger though so that's good. just one big mess.
