So, I'm still in London and I'm meant to be flying home on July 26. The only problem is that on Monday I went in to the ER (because it's free in the UK) and they ended up admitting me to the hospital. When I went in I knew I had been feeling like crap, but thought it was mostly probably an upper respiratory infection with a fever and whatnot. I started feeling sick last Thursday. By Friday it was just coughing and sneezing. But on top of all of this I was having an increase in D during the week. By Saturday my whole body ached and was in pain and I could tell I had a fever. My ears were so congested (and still are) that I can't really hear out of them that well. I ended up having 4+ episodes of D that day (which is unusual for me while I'm on Entocort), but it was also the day I got my period, and I have endometriosis which means super painful periods. I ended up throwing up the only solid food I had eaten that day. Then on Sunday I barely managed to finish one bottle of a smoothie drink, and still ended throwing up. But on Sunday I had no BM's whatsoever, and actually have had none until today.
On Monday I went to the ER and they said my CRP was over 100, and that the X-ray they took of my abdomen showed my intestines being inflamed. I also had the fever and all that which they were trying to lower and apparently my pulse was going really fast (135 when I came in) and then would be really "flighty" the rest of the time. After being admitted to the hospital they gave me two hydrocortisone shots and tramadol for pain (which I usually take for cramps anyways). Then they pretty much forgot about
me on Tuesday. I bugged them by saying just let me go home since they had stopped giving me any medicine that I didn't already give myself at home. They took more blood and said that my CRP was down to around 70. They told me I had an upper respiratory infection and that it was probably NOT a Crohn's flare since I hadn't had any bowel movements since I had come in - I did tell them that it was quite unusual for me. But then again, I hadn't really been eating much solid food at all.
Since I was released I have still felt horrible. I have been taking my antibiotics that they gave me (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) but I still feel the same. I tried to go to class yesterday morning but I think the walk from my dorm to the class was too much and after eating a piece of toast I felt like I was going to throw up and faint. The two people in charge of my program are being super awesome and taking care of me. They've been getting me gatorade, crackers and cheese and soups. It's a bit hard to try and get better here since we only have a small refrigerator and a microwave. But they have told me they'll still let me take the exam no matter what, even if it's a make up exam later on.
My question is if I should just wait it out and see if I get better this weekend and try and get through the last week of class and exams before heading home, OR if I should just leave this weekend and try and get better back home and then take the exam. I'd feel silly if I flew home and was better by Monday, especially since I'm supposed to leave next Saturday anyways. So really I just need other people's opinions. I can't decide and my family has said it is really up to me. I found out it will be $200 to change my flight, but that I can do it. And it's a non-stop flight, so all I have to do is make it to the plane and then try and sleep. All I've really been doing is sleeping anyways. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

Hi If it were me I'd stay put and rest until this passes. I really hope you feel better soon. You"ll have to go back if you do leave. How far do you have to fly? lol gail

HI- If I were you I would try and wait out the week. I know from experience that traveling when you dont feel well can be the worse thing ever. I hope you feel better soon.
I am planning on studying in London starting in September. I was wondering how you liked it? I am a little nervous about
traveling with Crohns, but I got to do it some time.
I hope you feel better soon. Let me know what you decide. Best of Luck.

I've been to London before, and I do love it here. The only problem is that for the past week I haven't been able to do anything. And unless I really start feeling better I don't think I'll get to do much of anything before I leave as well. I'm just getting tired of being in my room by myself all day sleeping, but it's all I have the energy to do. It just seems so tempting to go home and get taken care of.
My flight home would be 11 hours, but I figure once I'm on the plane I can just sleep.
I called my doctor's office back home and am waiting on a reply from them. Hope they can help me with this decision. I just know that if I stayed here I would feel like I would need to take the exam next week, and I'm not even sure I'll feel well enough by then. I hope so though. Ughhhh.. I hate this!
I think you'll have fun Dreamer06. London is an amazing place. Just make sure you take care of yourself and go at your own pace. Oh, and don't get sick like me! :)

Boy that is a tough decision. If you are still feeling so bad, maybe it is best to just go home. I can't imagine getting on a plane for 11 hours though. That alone would send me straight into anxietyville. I sure wish I could be of more help. It has to suck being so sick and so far from home. (((GENTLE HUGS)))

11 hours? I guess you are flying to somewhere on the west coast?
I've done this flight before, SFO to Heathrow and back. Even when I was feeling great, it wasn't any fun. Personally, I'd stay where you are at. If you are not feeling well, being forced to sit on a plane for 11 hours in a sitting upright position might not be a good thing. Airlines can be very temperamental about
letting you fly if you don't look well. They don't want the liability of having to deal with you if you have problems. Personally, I hate flying, so my opinion might be skewed.
I'd stay where you are at, you have access to good health care, and you have people looking after you. Wait until you feel better and try the flight.
Do you have a doctor/GI you can contact? Getting input from them and maybe getting them to talk to the doctors in London might be a good thing.
Hang in there. Being sick away from home is awful.

Please stay where you are and DO NOT FLY until your ears clear up. I was in Georgia once and had to get home to Mass. I had a sinus infection. I tried to change my ticket but they were going to charge me $200 to do so. I was a student and just did not have that kind of money. So I flew. And it was the WORST pain of my life. My ears couldn't handle the pressure changes and my head just felt like it was going to explode. I covered myself with a blanket and cried for the entire 2 and a half hour flight. I found out later that it was very dangerous to fly that way and I could have blown out an airdrum. You do NOT want that kind of pain for 11 hours. I know that it sucks being sick far from home but at least you have access to good care and people bringing you foods and stuff. If it is not a crohns flare it should probably clear up soon. If your scheduled flight home was this weekend I would tell you to postpone it. It is just too dangerous.

You guys all make super good points. I just heard back from my GI doctor's office from back home. He is out of the office until Tuesday, but his nurse talked to me about
all the stuff that has been happening. She said that they wouldn't necessarily tell me to hop on a flight and come home if it was just a flare. And that kind of goes along with what you are all saying about
flying in the condition I am right now. I think I'm just super homesick right now and want to be home with my family so that they could take care of me. But it doesn't really seem to be the most logical idea. And it probably would be super painful to have my ears go crazy on the plane if they still aren't unclogged by then. I think I'm just frustrated and want an easy way to get home.
But it does really seem that staying here is the option that makes the most sense. I just wish I felt better already. The nurse at my doctor's office was asking if I could get the bloodwork results and the abdominal x-ray, but I would have no idea how to go about
that seeing as it was at the ER. But she said what I told her should help.
It just sucks that my last week here will probably be spent resting and sleeping in my dorm room. Hence why I would rather spend it at home with family. But you guys make good points, and I should and will listen to them. I just wish I had a transporter machine to get me home. The nurse said that if it gets really bad then I can go back to the ER, but I'm refusing to do that. They ended up losing track of me there and forgetting I existed. I don't want to go back to that. So I'll be sticking it out for another week I guess. Thanks for listening!

If you can get hold of some prednisone....
But they are right do not fly with infected ears you can permanently damage your eardrum and it is excruciatingly painful to fly when your sinuses or ears are congested.

So my doctor ended up trying to call me the other night, but it was around 3 am London time.. so needless to say I missed the call. But I did talk to his office yesterday and they told me to up the Entocort again to 9 mg because I don't have any prednisone with me. Then when I get home I'll do bloodwork, stool samples and the lovely capsule endoscopy again. At least he was concerned enough to try and get back to me. That's what I love about
that office, they really do seem to care and want me to feel better.
I also think that if my ears are still this congested later on today or tomorrow that I'll go over to a pharmacy and ask if they have any recommendations to get my ears to "pop." It's so weird living in such a muffled world for so long. And some times it seems like my right ear makes weird little blip noises like it's trying to pop but can't. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to fix it.. even though this is definitely not Crohn's related? Thanks again! All of your comments on not traveling really did help make my mind up. Thank you all again!!!

Mucinex or psuedephed (if you can tolerate them) will help relieve the ear and sinus congestion, as will a hot shower or really steam in any form. Hope you feel better soon.

Another reason to stay put - you are very run down and don't need to pick up an extra "bug" or two on the plane or in the crowded airport. I like Benedryl (dipenhydramine) for stuffiness and clogged ears, it makes me sleepy. The psuedophedrine makes me too jumpy. Make sure you check with a pharmacist before you take anything because you are on prescript
ion meds and sometimes they clash with OTC's.
Good luck on your test, hope you feel better soon. I hate being sick away from home.

Hey Brit,
Somehow I lost track of your thread. I thought of you this morning and went digging for it. I am so glad you decided to stay put. You really shouldn't fly until your ears clear up. In the states they sell these little tube things you can put in your ears an hour before take off and an hour before landing that are supposed to help with the pressure changes. I can't remember what they are called but if you ask a pharmacist they should know. It least you are in London where everyone still speaks English!!! I hope you can get your ears cleared up before your scheduled flight, it is expensive to change. Do you have travel insurance? If so, a flight change for a medical reason may be covered. I would try different decongestants until you find one that will work for you on the flight. Do you have any way of seeing a regular doctor over there and not going through the ER? Could your school refer you to someone? Could you just find someone in the phone book? Even if you had to pay out of pocket to see a regular doc it would be worth it to get whatever you need for your ears.
Let us know how you are!

Thanks for thinking of me! I'm feeling better each day, which is definitely good news. The only problem is that my ears are still so clogged. I went to the pharmacist over the weekend and got some Sudafed to try and help with it, but it hasn't done the trick yet and it makes my heart race. So I think I might go back to the pharmacist tomorrow and try to see if something else will work. All my Crohn's issues are still acting up, but I'll take what I can get at this point in order to just take my exams and head home on Saturday.
So hopefully I can get something figured out for my ears, because I do not want to pay for a private doctor - it's super expensive. That's why I went to the ER in the first place, because it's free in London. So I'll just see how it goes and hope things are better by Saturday.

Oh my gosh! How did I miss this thread?? That's what happens when you don't have computer access for a couple of days I guess. I hate to hear you are going through all this at the end of such an exciting time in your life.
Have you finished the round of amoxicilan? Have you had any GI problems while on it?? It is one of those antibiotics that can aggrevate/put you into a flare. (It gives me persistent D)
Good luck and feel better soon!

Sudafed gives me the racing heart too. If your ears are still clogged I HIGHLY suggest finding a way to get them seen again before fly. I would just hate for you to have excrutiating pain on an 11 hour flight or even worse, blow an ear drum.

So I went back to the pharmacy, but this time the pharmacist didn't seem too concerned (or helpful). He first tried to give me something to help clean out extra ear wax, and I had to remind him that that was definitely not the issue with me. So instead he told me to try this vapor rub stuff but to put it into some hot water and let myself breathe it in. I'm not sure how much that's going to help with my ears though. My throat doesn't really hurt anymore, but I'm still coughing and I definitely still have mucus. So I'm guessing that's why my ears are still clogged. I just don't have the time to go to the doctor because I have exams all day tomorrow and Friday, and then I'm leaving on Saturday. I'm just going to have to hope this vapor rub works or that my ears don't freak out on the plane. But I definitely can't stay here longer and I'd rather just get it over with and go home and deal with it there. Here's hoping my ears don't have permanent damage though! And then when I get home I can hopefully get my Crohn's stuff under control again.

Get some over the counter benadryl and take some before your flight and again halfway through. It will dry up the fluids in your sinuses and ears and also help you sleep most of the way.
