Since you are our unfortunate resident Cipro expert, I wanted to bounce a couple questions off you.

My mom has Lyme disease and chronic bladder infections from a dropped bladder.  She also had a knee replacement about 8 years back.  So she has been on a lot of antibiotics in her day.  I think she is always on them.  Anyway, recently she started having issues with her Achilles Tendon.  She went to the doctor and they said it was about to rupture.  She was put in an orthopedic boot and has to wear it for 60 days to try to avoid surgery.  She is currently on Doxicycline for the Lyme and does not think she has been on Cipro for a long time.

Do you know if other antibiotics cause this issue? Any info you have would be helpful. Thanks!

Sorry this is going on with your Mom but I have to say it is fortunate she found a doc that admitted the tendon was about to rupture and put her in a boot, fantastic start...

First thing coming to mind is blood clots now, due to lack of use...If you recall, the levaquin that took me down caused my legs to swell and becuase they were 'dead' the blood flow naturally decreased...It was not due to Crohn's like the docs said...They also encouraged me to walk on these dead legs which caused more damage...So again, Mom is fortunate she is being 'cared' for...

 

As for the abx...ALL QUINOLONES have the ability to ruin your life...Cipro, Levaquin, Floxin to name a few...the black box warning is now on it but I don't see that stopping victims from becoming victims...

 

For my damaged body, they prescribed everything from Lyrica to Oxycontin but I knew I would get worse...As I wrote in another post, I used essential oils recommended by a kinesiologist...Many don't 'believe' in this stuff but I am here to say IT WORKS...It took over a year to get acceptable relief but it was better than the alternatives...

 

Heres the recipe:

Rosemary Oil ~10 drops

Lavender Oil ~10 drops

Peppermint Oil~10 drops

Add to one ounce of carrier oil such as Sweet Almond Oil or Grapeseed Oil...

 

The whole lot of oils should cost less than $20 and last for months...

 

As with anything new, esp. oils, test on wrist for reactions...

 

This mixture can be rubbed into arms and legs and gave me immediate relief from the NERVE BURNING that was excrutiating for months...Augusta has Uncle Deans Good Groceries on Western Avenue if my memory serves me...I get all my things at their store here in Winslow...

 

My husband just walked in a saw your post, he exclaimed 'tell Mom to stop using the Cipro immediately'...

 

Everywhere you look, it starts with a UTI and all of a sudden you are crippled...UNFAIR!!!

 

FYI, Uncle Deans also has a product called Tendon Rescue, near the oils, basically same ingredients but I choose the other cause I know whats in it tongue

 

Sending Peace & Light to your Mom and beg our Maker that she has nothing near what I had...I am not religious, but I will send some healing light from me to you both...

is there any way to know if anti-b's has caused the tendon damage?  I have suffered with severe pain in my left shoulder, tri-cep, and bicep area for the last 18 months ...each month it gets worse.

I finally had an MRI done and one doctor says the MRI shows a slight tear in supraspanadous (Spelling?) another says it is caused by inflamation in my rotator cuff.  I did tear my supra...but that was in 1999 and had no issues with it after 6 or 7 months from the time of the accident.

I have however taken Cipro probably 15 times or more since 1999 and at least twice I took it for 30 straight days.  The last dose of anti-b was flagyl.  But I am sure that I have taken cipro at least twice in the last 18 months...probably more like 3 or 4 times.

The ortho doc I went to see yesterday...never read my MRI film...gave the diagnosis and then had them take an x-ray.  He said he had never heard that Cipro was causing a problem with tendons and said it was all internet BS.  His diagnosis and plan of action after a 4 to 5 minute visit and evaluation was         1) get an x-ray  2) give me a shot of cortizone  3) consult with his partner the surgeon and schedule a time for him to go in and scrape my socket area to make more room for roator cuff.

I left without making that appointment....and did not take the shot of cortizone

But still I have to wonder if the damage and pain is due to Cipro...so back to the original question...is there a way to tell if the Cipro is the cause of my problem?  I would sure hate to give it up since it is the one anti-b that has been the most effective for me.

Thanks MamaDove and hubby! My parents live in Mass (where I am originally from) and I just heard about her tendon last night. I knew it was swollen and hurting her and I had told her to see her orthopedist asap. It did not dawn on me until this morning that it could be from her antibiotic use. I called her and she wasn't home and I called her cell phone immediatly. She was shopping for a new refridgerator (when it rains it pours lol - hers died yesterday). I told her I just needed to bother her for a second and I made sure she was NOT taking Cipro or Levaquin. I will go through the rest of the list with her and my dad tonight. She is just on the Doxicycline right now. Her doc seems to be doing a good job. He has 2 wedges in the boot to protect the tendon and after a month she can go down to one wedge. He also is not giving her pain killers beyond tylenol or alleve because she needs to feel how much pressure she is putting on it and to not let it pull.

I appreciate you sending warmth and light Mamadove. She does need it. Unfortunatly I don't see her avoiding antibiotics in the future but she will never again take anything from that class. I didn't get to talk to her for long but I believe it has been a long time since she took that class. With her dropped bladder she has chronic UTI's and the only thing that will get her off antibiotics is surgery, a hysterectomy and bladder repair. She has osteo-arthritis as well and will eventually need her other knee replaced. I think she will be on anti-biotics for that too. And now that her Lyme is back, they have her on Doxi for that.

I was under the impression Lyme has to be treated with antibiotics. Hopefully just safe ones. I will pass on your recipe and I am sure she wll try it in addition to her current treatment. I am just glad they are trying options other than surgery. I'll keep you posted!

If your ortho doc thinks tendon damage from Cipro in Internet BS, I would like to slit his achilles and see what it's like for thousands of us sufferers of the 'internet bs'...

My old GI partner, while psuhing me for Remicade (for the profit) wasn't hesitating to badger me with his opinion of LDN...An internet hoax, he called it...I have a bu**et with his name on it turn

If the quinolone family of abx were not causing thousands of severe tendon issues as well as a multitude of other lifetime agonizing issues, why would the FDA suddenly put a black box warning on it? Print that off the FDA website for your ortho...He may want to toss his diploma in the trash after you prove him wrong...How can you be treated properly for tendon damage if they don't acknowledge how you got it...Many of these experts treatment protocols will do further damage that's why I steered clear...My rheumy ortho, PCP and physiatrist all helped in the cover up of the damage levaquin did to me...They all suck!!!

Fitzy's Mom is fortunate to have Fitzy investigate this for her and hopefully she will avoid permanent damage...I did not...I will live with the scars the levaquin gave me for the rest of my life...BTW~the tendons can rupture even after several years of exposure to the quinolones, don't let anyone tell you different...

Believe me, I am a victim of this and didn't ask to be...I now consider myself a survivor but in the back of my mind I am still a victim...

Please look for different ways to help yourself, the docs are useless esp. in this realm...I just realized that at the same appt he said that tendon damage was an internet BS but HE COULD SCHEDULE AN OPERATION TO SCRAPE...That says it all for me...More bad people! And you can tell him MamaDove would like to put a curse on him, if I could skull

I will be discussing this further with my primary...he is someone I trust very much and has been very supportive in all areas of my treatment.

I doubt i will ever be seeing that ortho doc again...but if i do...i will tell him to keep an eye out for you...LOL

Tendons must be the issue of the month. A friend of mine who has no history of antibiotic use but was an athlete and now a police officer had a tendon give out in his ankle a couple years ago. After surgery and a long recovery he is facing the same problem in his wrist. I never knew they were such popular injuries.

Last year a professor had a ruptured achilles and a classmate ruptured his playing basketball the exact same week. They had surgery and crutches at the same time. Crazy!
