Hi abseeley and welcome to the forum! The Maker's Diet is the first book I read after my son's diagnosis. Jordan Rubin's story is inspiring, to say the least! He went on to start his own supplement company and is now the owner of a multi-million (billion?) dollar company. Many people see this as a turn-off, and I understand, because he does suggest you use his supplements in the book. If you can read the book and put all that aside, there IS information there to learn. Also, you do NOT have to buy his brand of supplements if you choose to take what he recommends (digestive enzymes, probiotics, omega 3s, etc.). They do tend to be more pricey than other brands.
Julie1014 was right. This diet has been discussed here at length. CrazyHarry says it has changed his health for the better. He once did a side by side comparison of the Maker's Diet and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), named so by the author of the book chewbacchi recommended here--Elaine Gottschall. The diets are very similar. Maybe CrazyHarry will be along soon...
I feel the diet has made a big difference for my son. We started the MD after reading the book and through the year I also began using SCD recipes, as well. Do we adhere 100% to either diet? No, but only from the standpoint that I don't always purchase organics (I tend to use the "dirty dozen" list) and my son will NOT consume milk. (The SCD is opposed to milk anyway!--one of the differences between the diets). My son does adhere to the diet from the standpoint that he no longer eats ANYTHING processed. No grains, no sugar (and no form of sugar--honey is allowed), no dairy. He does however, eat SCD legal yogurt every day.
On a side note, has anyone seen the commercial PROMOTING high fructose corn syrup??? I couldn't believe it!!! Just saw it yesterday! I guess the hfcs folks feel they've taken a hit and need to promote their product which some would argue has made America obese... it's in everything!
So I will ditto what chewbacchi said. After you read the MD, also read Breaking the Vicious Cycle... Personally, I have not found this change of diet to be that difficult--though I guess not everyone would agree with me. Our family of 4 all eat this way now.
Good luck to you!!!
