Today I got an rx for B12 so I can give myself the shots at home (to avoid the $15 office visit).  Now I'm wondering how much the rx will be & will it defeat the purpose of doing it myself.  Any ideas?  I'm going to the pharmacy after work but just thought I'd throw that out there.  Any one else do their own shots?  My dr suggested it but I hadn't heard it before.

Hi sugarfoot. Im on B12 injections for the past 20 years (one a month). I have tried to give them to myself but could not manage it. My public health nurse now gives them to me and it does'nt cost anything. I live in Ireland but im sure you can also get them for free in the U.S. Then again maybe you might manage fine injecting yourself. Good luck

For me with insurance, the prescription for the B12 and the needles was cheaper than my $20 co-pay.

i go in to my gp to get mine done i think it socst me $5 bucks NZ and i guess thats pretty reasonable dnt think i cld do them myself

I don't remember how much the needles cost, but the B12 was some ridiculous amount like $4 for a 3 month supply. The needles weren't much more expensive. I draw up the shot and get it all ready and my husband gives it to me. He is a really good man. He always appologizes cause he's afraid he's hurt me, but even if he did, the one second of pain, would be so worth not having to drive to the doctor, wait, get the shot and drive home, every 2 weeks. Thats about 2 hours, I just got back in my life. Every 2 weeks.

Twice a month on every other Friday I go in get my B12 shot at no cost on my way home from work. Don't have to drive out of my way or anything. I would be too chicken to give them to myself, although my husband has given to me before too.

Sugarfoot, I do my own shots, the B12, needles and alcohol wipes are all very cheap!!

I got my shots for about 3 months (1/months) at the Dr. office then he weaned me on to 1200mg timed release tabs and I've been doing good with that ever since (7 yrs ago now), it was worth paying the 11.00 getting the shots at the office rather than messing around with it at home.

Thanks for the replies.  It ended up being $5.99 for the B12, not including needles (my boyfriend is diabetic, so I stole one of his). 

When I had BCBS, it was free.  Now that I have Aetna, they charge a $15 office visit to have it done.  So it's worth the time & money for me to do them at home.

I have BCBS and it's free for me as long as it's done in the doctor's office. Crazy thing about my DH insurance, if I were to give them myself it wouldn't be covered! They consider it a supplement and won't cover "vitamins" -- but they WILL pay my pcp to roughly $20.00/mo to give me the shot.

Same with me, Lamb, mine wasn't covered either, done outside of the office.  Insurance is so screwy.  But the $5.99 price was without insurance .

My husbands GI doc told us that they make a B12 nasal spray that works well. I'm going to try and find some of that! I started another thread about it, but didn't get much response.
