Crohns in siblings?

Does anyone have any info on the likelihood of a sibling having Crohn's? My daughter was diagnosed at 13, and now with my son approaching the same age, I find myself tending to worry if he gets a bug, fever, or stomach ache. I've checked the around and can't seem to find any research data to indicate how much more likely a sibling is to develop Crohn's.

I used to work with a girl who was diagnosed at 23, within months, her twin sister also was diagnosed with Crohn's.

while this is a far cry from scientific research, none of my siblings, nor any of the siblings of fellow crohns patients that i know, have any signs of disease

There are stats on one parent having CD that for their offspring there is a -10 to -15 fold increased risk to their offspring developing an IBD as well (either CD or UC) and in the research it does mention that if one twin has CD there is a 40-60% chance the other twin will also get CD, it's a matter of it being triggered for each person as well.

I thought that I read somewhere that if a parent has UC or CD then their child has a 20% greater risk and if a person has either, their siblings have a 30% greater risk.  I don't recall where I read it or whether it is accurate.   When have a few minutes I will try to find it.  Best wishes!

The research I quote above is from a Dr. Kevin Rioux from the University of Alberta whom is an IBD researcher on the genetics and inheritance of IBD. He does state that a significant percentage (~20%) of IBD patients have a relative that also suffers from IBD, but when it comes to a parent with an IBD the chances of passing it to an offspring is 10- to 15- fold increased risk.

Oh gosh no, not at all, I just thought I'd refer back to my CCFC journal I have where the info was printed...I would imagine that some stats might differ from the US to Candad and even europe...believe me I didn't take it that way at all, I knew I read something about the 20% thing too, and then the specific info of parent to offspring, funny how that differs from 20% relative and 10- to 15- fold from parent to offspring.

I don't know about the research and the stats that prove it one way or another but I do know this...

I have Crohn's

My brother has it

and My father.

Ya, in the same article (that I've been quoting from above) it states that there are cases of familial IBD where nearly every member of one family has the condition...both your mom and dad having it sure is some bad luck eh...it's probably becoming more and more common for IBDers to meet and get into relationships with one another because now a days there's even more prevalance of the disease then ever before.

I've been worried about my siblings getting Crohn's... Recently, I heard that my brother was having some stomach problems...

And the doctor said he had gastritis...

But my brother didn't mention that I had Crohn's disease... and he doesn't want to get a colonoscopy done. :(... Been trying to convince him to get one done, but he won't hear of it. He says he's doing fine, the doctor put him on some medicine or something that he says is helping him...

So, I guess as long as he's doing okay....

Still... I really worry... :(

i've been told by my GI and through my own research that if you have a sibling with crohns or ulcertive colitis you have a 30% more of chance of getting it and if you have a twin with it, it's a 40% chance. My twin sister was diagnosed with UC when she was 16...i'm 21 and just got diagnosed with Crohns..what are the odds? lol...o well!!

40-60% according to research in Canada for twins...weird thing is your twin sis has UC and you have CD...according to Dr.Kevin Rioux if one twin has CD the other has a 40-60% chance of also getting CD...of course much more still needs to be learned.

I have a coworker who has twins. One of her twins was Dx with a major case of CD at the age of 18 and really struggles with it daily. Her twin sister however, does not (at least now) have the disease.

hi i was just reading i dont have crohn's i got uc but i'm the only sibling that seemed to have gotten this horrible disease. i have 1 full blooded sister and 3 half sister's and 1 half brother and we all have the same dad. and i got the inheritance from my dad's side.

Stranger things can happen..... I was diagnosed with CD in 1997. I have two full blooded brothers neither have any stomach complications. I have two step brothers, one on my mom's side and one one on my dad's side. Both of my step brothers have CD. Neither three of us are blood related in any way. Talk about weird.
