Help Flagyl 14 month old baby.

My baby was scoped a few weeks ago and they found inflammation/ulcers in her tummy and bowel. The biopsy report said that infection or crohn's cannot be ruled out. SO the GI put her on flagyl for three weeks (it has been 8 days) and that should help either one, but when she comes off it if her symptoms stay away it was probably an infection otherwise could be crohn's disease.

Anyway we saw a difference after three days, her mood had changed and the night time and day time screaming stopped and some of her BMs were less mucusy. Anyway as of yesterday (day 7) she started screaming again and has thrown up three times since (lots of food came up) and has developed a rash on her back and bum (pimpley one). I thought it might be a virus but other then these things she is not extra tired or different so it must no be a virus.

I am wondering that she might have a reaction to the flagyl, but wouldn't it of shown up before the seven day mark? Or maybe it is crohns and she is having a flare up? I can't get in touch with the GI until Tuesday so I am not sure what to do. Last night she pooed in the night and screaming like nothing else and her day nap today she screamed and pushing her tummy and bum up into the air like she is in so much pain. I can't bare to see her like this anymore.

Any tips ideas would be much appreciated.

 

I don't have an answer but am sorry you are going through this and wish her relief soon. If you can't reach the GI call her Pediatrician. I would say this is an emergency if she is in pain and you think she may have had a reaction.

The rash, especially on the back, might mean she has become allergic to the Flagyl. Check with your doctor or medical help line or emergency immediately. The listed side effects include nausea and vomiting, stomach/back pain, rash/hives/redness/itching and for those side effects it suggests "Check with your doctor as soon as possible".

Thank you so much for you replies/support. I rang the childrens hospital and they put me on to an advice line, the nurse said it was unlikely to be a reaction from the flagyl as she has been taking it for 8 days. She didn't seem to worried and just said to keep an eye on her. Meanwhile my son (3 yrs) started vomitting so I figure she must of had a bug/virus. She usually gets so lethargic from the bugs though so I am wondering if the flagyl made the bug less servere?

Anyway fingers crossed that is all it is, but I will take her to the GP tomorrow if she gets worse overnight. It is very confusing with a baby so young because they can't tell you what is going on, really just a guessing game I suppose.

Is it just me, or does that medication seem a little strong for a baby? I'm wondering though, did the doctor test/find bacteria as the cause of your child's symptoms? The Flagyl website indicates that usual therapy is 7-10 days, Crohn's disease is not an approved indication for Flagyl, Flagyl is carcinogenic in rats and mice, and that unnecessary use should be avoided.

Did your doctor suggest perhaps your baby is allergic to what she is eating/drinking? Is she on formula or cow's milk? eating any grains? Has she ever been on antibiotics? I would have a hunch that she may have a fungal infection (antibiotics are fungal metabolites) and the milk and grains she is eating are feeding it. Flagyl would not be the first thing I would prescribe, 'IF" that was the case. Flagyl is an antibiotic, which causes yeast overgrowth. Could the rash/pain be an indication of that? But, I am not a doctor. I just know that fungus is often overlooked with GI symptoms and rashes. The Flagyl would not make the virus bug less severe, as you were wondering, if she had a virus.

As a parent, it is so difficult to see your precious baby suffering like that. It's just me, but I would be hesitant to give my baby a drug that is heavily cautioned, as the first line of defense, especially if bacteria wasn't proven to be causing the inflammation. Has your child been tested for celiac's disease, lactose intolerance? I would try an elimination diet, one without grains and cow's milk. If you notice an improvement, you may be onto something. You may not find your answer without experimenting, and your doctor may not make that suggestion to you. Mine never did, but I eventually learned on my own that diet was "the" factor in my symptoms. I'd also suggest probiotics for your little one, especially after taking a strong antibiotic.

The question that keeps coming back to me is, has your baby ever taken antibiotics before? I hope your baby feels better soon. It breaks my heart when babies are sick. They just can't tell us what is wrong, and we feel so helpless. Lots of well wishes going your way............ :)

Kim123, sorry its a long story... but basically she has been off cows milk and soy all her life (when I was feeding I didn't eat it and then she went straight on neocate formula which is prescribed and doesn't have any allergenics). She had a lactose problem at 3 weeks old which I gave her some stuff to conteract the lactose in the b/milk, the GI thought she still might have that so took enzymes from her tummy during the colonoscopy/endoscopy but it turned out normal. My eldest daughter had celiac disease but I knew that wasn't the problem as she had the symptoms before she started eating gluten (started eating gluten at 12 months) and the biopsies said her villi was normal. She has cronic reflux which is originally why he scoped her thinking she had damage to her oesophigus (sp?). at 10/11 months she went crazy so I increased her losec (reflux) meds like I usually did when she went crazy it stopped her spewing but didn't stop her screaming and she started doing the mucusy poos. Anyway the day of the scope he found the ulcers and said she must have allergenic collitis and gave me the speal on keeping of soy and dairy (she had dairy two weeks before the scope in preparation) and that it was possibly other food too causing it. But when he got the biopsy results it rulled out collitis of any form, it also said they couldn't diagnose why she had it but infection or crohn's could not be ruled out. So that is when he prescribed the flagyl. And no my baby has never been on antibiotics before although she has had many virus, it takes her forever to get over them too, but mostly have been just a virus not infection, and my GP is not big on antibiotics so even when she had an infection he encouraged me to let her sort it out herself.

Sally, thanks for your reply, I really don't know if that women knew what she was on about either, but I am pretty convinced now that she has a virus as she was very lethargic this morning and threw up twice today but is doing well this afternoon. But I am going ot take her to the GP to check her over. She hasn't had any more tummy pains though which is good. That must of been scarey for you, its amazing it too so long to kick in, is that normal?
