Has anyone had problems with Asacol

So when I was first diagnosed, they started me on Entocort and Asacol...and they apparently didn't work because I ended up in the hospital anyway.  I did tons of research on all of the possible medications and never found anything that said that I would lose hair from any of my treatments.  I lost a third of my hair from the Asacol, without even knowing that was what was causing it...so I called my GI and they told me that was what was causing it.  My question is, has anyone else run into this?

Do you have any other suggestions for dietary things I should try to stay away from? other that corn and some of the other things that we don't really digest well anyway?

I have not noticed any abnormal hair loss (thank God) from Asacol. I've been on it since 2001

I did have some hair loss at first, but after being on it for awhile that stopped.

I like mj8dokken have been on it for years. I never had any hairloss until this past 6-8 mos or so. But my GI feels its more from me being anemic than the Asacol. And my hairloss has not been that bad. Also the steroid (Entocort) can cause hairloss too. So maybe being on them both at the same time caused the increase in hairloss.

Many folks add extra Folic Acid and some also add Biotin to help with the hairloss. Biotin didn't like my tummy too much, but some have had great luck with it.

Hi,

I have been on Lialda for almost 8 months now. 3 months ago I started losing my hair. I'm not sure if it's from the Lialda or major stress from this disease and other health issues but it sucks either way. I'm certain my Christmas I will need a wig ... so depressing! :-\

Did you start losing your hair right away on the Asacol? Or did it take a few months after you started it? Some doctors tell me when you start losing hair you have to look at what was going on 3 months earlier in your life and that will tell you the reason why your hair is falling out. I don't know if it's true or not but that's what I've heard. I'm still hoping my hair loss is from stress and it will stop ASAP. I really don't want to switch to another drug.

Hi Tami,

I think my hairloss started shortly after I started asacol, but it stopped probably within 3-6 months. Give asacol a chance, it's one of the less harsh drugs so if you can benefit from it it's better than moving up to drugs with more serious side effects. I know it's hard, but hang in there. smilewinkgrin

I was on Asacol for a week when I was first diagnosed. It didn't help me at all. Lialda is basically the same as Asacol but it's a once a day pill. I sure hope my hair loss stops soon. It's really scaring me. I'm afraid to wash my hair and brush it. :-( I only wash it 3 days a week. On the days I don't wash it I don't lose so much.

I've noticed no hair loss from Asacol.  I lost a lot of my hair when I was flaring and also while on prednisone.  My GI told me that it can take 3-4 months for the Asacol to kick in and to begin to feel any benefits from it.  It took me about 3 to notice a change.  I know it seems like forever but hang in there!

My hair loss started during my third year on pentasa. I now use rogaine.
