What the? Antibiotic helped my Crohn's?

Ok something really weird has happened. I have been flaring on and off for like 9 months now. Not on any CD meds yet, I have a scan this Friday to see what activity is there. (Was in remission for 4 years) I've been on antibiotics and it makes is worse...as expected right? Well, somebody explain this then. last week I came down with strep throat..ugg! It was aweful, so I went to the doc and they gave me an antibiotic shot in the bum cuz I couldn't swallow. That was on Wed. On Sunday I had a solid BM...first in like over a year. And they've been solid every since. No D at all. What in the world? I feel great! No CD symptoms. Could it all have been an infection in the intestines all along? I go for a entrocolisis on Friday. What if they don't find anything...this is totally weird. Has this happened to anyone? I'm afraid I'll wake up tomorrow and all my symptoms will be back, but I just don't know. I mean I know I shouldn't complain and really I'm not..but I just find this all very odd.
Any feedback is appreciated.

Hope it continues I have had the same thing taking antibotics internally before my DX. lol gail

Read Hailey's letter on the crohns board. Their daughter was treated w/ antibiotics for pnemonia and her UC went away.

Could be for the same reason that antibiotics help people with non-bacterial sinus 'infections', colds, and men with non-bacterial prostititis. Antibiotics have well documnented anti-inflammatory effects for reasons that aren't fully understood.

Flagyl is an antibiotic often used in the treatment of IBD, some antis can definitely help while others can make things worse...

It is extreamly important though, that you take a good probiotic daily because antis tend to kill everything leaving your system more vulnerable and it's key to take the probiotics at least 2 hours after you're done taking the antis for the day or the antis will just kill off the pros too.

Taking probiotics daily and indefinitely (remission or not) is almost essential now that they've learned we tend to have bad bacterial over growth and probiotics help keep a balanced gut flora.

FitzyK23> That's an interesting note, as Ebringer in the UK has suggested that Klebsiella pneumoniae (which is one of several organisms that can cause pneumonia) is responsible for Crohn's. So- not at all out of this world unlikely that knocking back the bacterium with antibiotics could put someone into remission.

Unfortunately, Kp tends to be antibiotic resistant, and can develop resistance to different abx quickly.

I had the same experience when I took Cipro for a supposed bladder infection last year.  Funny thing is that I told my GI (now Ex-GI) and he just laughed it off like some sort of coincidence since he was just so sure that I nothing wrong with me.  My new doc told me what everyone else is saying...that sometimes antibiotics can help bring about remission but it does not work for everyone.  Good luck to you and I hope you keep moving in the right direction.  Stay well.

Cipro is maybe not as common as flagyl, but it is also used to treat Crohn's.  My GI had me on both for 3-4 months last year.

I took 10 days of Cipro and have had the same experience. I have had D since April and when I started the Cipro no more D.

I swear that when I was taking Bactrim, my BMs were good. It might have been all of the water I was injesting with it.

I'm taking Flagyl and Cipro now. It's really hard to take the Flagyl because it makes me feel really crappy.

I have refused the prednisone. I hope that I am not doing myself more harm, but I am soooooo scared of it.

Bactrim is also known as sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SXT). It is widely known for being effective on Klebsiella infections (those that are not yet resistant to SXT, of course). Interestingly, so is Cipro.
