meds right after surgery

Hi Emrose,
I never stopped taking my meds even after surgery, but for me I never experienced remission. Please dont let my story turn you off cause from what I have read here it has been mostly positive results after surgery. So I wish your husband a very long remission and good luck to you both.

They loaded me on on the old crohn's drugs after surgery, Prenizone suffazalizene. Then i didn't need them anymore for about 5 years. So basically i was good for about 5 years it was nice. Almost need another resection but remicade is helping me now.

I started taking probiotics about a week after surgery. As far as Crohn's meds, I decided to take Pentasa. My GI thought I should take Imuran or Humira (was on Humira before surgery), but I wanted to take a break from the heavy hitters. I'll have a small bowel follow through at the one year mark and we'll re-evaluate my treatment then. My surgery was in April and I feel better and better as time goes on. Good luck to your husband!

ski bum - it's good to hear your choice of meds. I don't know how I feel about starting with humira when there are other options. our GI doesn't like the idea of pentasa but he's very aggressive and wants to move to the "heavy hitters" right away. I'm doing all the research I can before we make a decision and your story helps.

Gail- thanks also for sharing. I have posted a few times regarding my husbands situation and always appreciate your responses. It's really nice of you to take the time and always share your perspective. It sounds like surgery was the right thing for you and it's interesting that you are now med free. Currently, a low roughage diet is also helping my husband.
