has anyone here ever taken bentyl? i'm still not really sure what it's supposed to do! i've been told it stops the intestines from cramping up and making you feel like you have to go all the time...but i read that you shouldn't take it if you have ulcerative colitis...which is pretty darn close to crohn's so why did my doctors give it to me when i was in the hospital? i also read that it helps with the pain and cramping you get right after you eat, so taking it before you eat helps...im just still confused on what it really does and if it's safe for me to take!

I also heard you're not supposed to take it with a hiatal hernia, but my doctor prescribed medicine for that and bentyl anyway. I was fine and still seem to be.
Bentyl will probably make your vision blurry. That's the side effect I most remember anyway. It's an anti-spasmodic so you should have a lot less cramping! Always a nice thing and I was pleased with it. I hope it works for you.

Yeah, LMills is right. It is an anti-spasmodic (muscle relaxer). It works wonders on my gut, but unfortunately it also gives me fish-bowl vision which I cannot tolerate. Sometimes cutting the dose in half helps with the vision thing tho.

ImAud -

just started taking this medication a week (?) or so ago. Did a search in the box up top and read up on it... glad I did. Take it at night because it did make my vision blurry and a bit sleepy. I am sleeping better while on this medication with little side effects and only a small dent in my pocket.

i must be like resistant to these meds lol..i dont get sleepy on it or have blurry vision..i may have had some blurry vision with it when i was in the hospital when i first started taking it, but it doesn't really affect me now..(i think being on all types of opiates in the hospital has made my body more used to this type of stuff lol)...i honestly dont even know if it helps me! i just take it when i feel really gassy and bloated..not really sure if it helps or if the gas just goes away on its own...but atleast it's safe to take..i was worried it was unsafe to take

bentyl did absolutely NOTHING for me, except cost money to get the script filled. i was put on it a while ago, right after i was diagnosed, so i don't really remember a lot of specifics, but i do recall telling one of my gastros that i didn't think it did anything and he whole-heartedly agreed...

I tried it. Told by my GI to take it for cramping & pain. I took it for abdominal pain a couple times & it did nothing. I told the GI who told me it must've not been intestinal pain then. Huh.
