Hi Guys,

I went to my GP today withpain in the tummy and he has sent me over to the ER to be checked over. They did a blood tests and the results came back fine. They said that there was no sing of inflammation in my body.

My question is this, has anyone ever had a blood test that came back normal without sings of inflammation whilst active with chrons?

yep i have conor. Most of the time my bloods come back normal even when i have inflammation.

How does that work? How can they geta correct dx of chrons when blood tests show no inflammation?

Not sure to be honest. I had bloods before a colonoscopy and the bloods were normal but the colonoscopy showed inflammation. They peformed a biopsy on the inlfammed tissue and it was my crohns.

Isn't it strange considering the inflammation is the big thing in an IBD, but yet blood test do not always pick it up.

If I remember correctly, my bloodwork was normal when I was diagnosed, but my disease is mild and was localized primarily at the time in one specific area... ah, the frustrating mysteries of the body and medical testing!

My bloodwork has always been normal. My Colonoscopy picked up ulcers and inflammation in 3 areas. My pill cam is what got me the official diagnosis and it showed inflammation throughout my entire small bowel.

It is frustrating because one would think inflammation would show up in the blood, but I guess it doesn't always...

Couldn't agree more guys, blood works are meant to show it up. I just hope that inflammation does not just disappear overnight, otherways, I will be going through this all again.

Hi Guy's,

Just to add a little to this. I was sent to the er as stated above and they did the tests and said that all was showing as fine, however, my doctors surgery has called me this evening, just there, and asked that I come in and see them to discuss the blood results. Now, they only do that if something has been found. In so far as I am aware, both the doctors in the hospital and my own gp did they same tests. Therefore, why would they be given me different answers? (ps, doctors blood are sent to the hospital for testing, so they have been done in the same place).

My blood work usually goes along pretty well with my symptoms. Every time I've flared the numbers come back high, sometimes through the roof! So I don't know why it wouldn't show up sometimes, that is strange to me. Maybe it just hasn't been long enough for it to show up in the blood?

Hi Guy's,

so, I went to the GP's office today and he has said that my Bloods are showning heavy inflammation. Go Figure! They where tested in the same hospital and two different sets of results. But, at least I now know that the inflammation is there, cause my stomach is killing me and some bleeding again. Awh well, only one week to go until I see the GI doctor.

Bloodwork is not always an accurate reflection of what's going on in the body...it's good to tell if your electrolytes are out of whack, or you have a blatant infection, or you're anemic, things like that...but it can really change on a dime. I always remind people that the best way to interpret blood work is to look at a SERIES of results over the course of days/weeks...this gives a much better picture of what's really going on in terms of chronic disease activity.

I am greatful. Wish me luck for tommorow, I have to go to special investigations Unit about my heart. I have been getting pains in the chest and the doc has order the tests. It is a pitty a GI cannot work as quick, it was sent to them yesterday anfd they rang me this morning to tell me I have to go tommorow. Anyone else ever get chest pain by the heart with their chrons?

With regards to the blood, the doctor has suggested that the ESR reulst and bloodworks are showning large amount on inflammation in the body. It will be great to have the GI confirm all this.

Suspected cardiac problems usually get their attention real quick. Puts you right at the front of the triage line in ER. (Wonder if we could re-position our heart to our intestines?)

My experience is there is not always a direct correlation.  I have had drs that like to use just bloodwork and others who only like to treat the symptoms.  Its not a perfect science, so i think to go by what you are feeling is more valuable.

Thanks for the responces to the post. I got to say that it seems that the bloodworks do not always show the answers. However, my GPs showed Inflammation and the hospitals didn't. Just Strange.

Anyway, thankfully the SIU guys have given my heart a clean bill of health. Infact, they said that my heart is pretty strong, but that I need to try and control the BPM more. I am on average 90 BPM, which is not that bad considering what I am withing with at the monent.
