So my gastro prescribed me Clinoril (an Nsaid for arthritis) 200 mgs per day for my pretty bad joint pain that started about a month ago.  My shoulders, knees, feet and back are hurting pretty bad, out of nowhere? I take yoga, walk a lot, lift weights about once a week.  I'm sure if its an Nsaid, it will def help with the pain, but aren't we crohnies supposed to stay away from Nsaids?  Why would a gastro prescribe that? He said if I don't feel better, we can try Methotrexate shots. Just curious your thoughts.....

I have sworn off all NSAIDS, myself, and I have definitely noticed an improvement. I take homeopathic pellets for headaches and joint pain as needed. But, that's just me. Some crohnies on here take tylenol and other NSAIDS like there's no tomorrow, and seem to have no bad side effects. If you're not in a flare now, and you notice GI symptoms creeping up out of nowhere - I would be wary. Lots of GI's don't follow the "NO NSAIDS" policy... so it's not abnormal to have been rx'd the Clinoril. Just keep your eyes open, keep good notes, and most importantly - follow your gut!

I see, he is a kaiser doctor too, maybe they don't care. I just had a conoscopy and they used a baloon to dilate a stricture? THey said some amount of bleeding. Either way I did email him and ask him if I should be concerned........I can't believe I have to ask a gastro this? I thought they just KNEW this stuff!

My GI prescribed a couple different NSAIDs to deal with not only the pain but the inflammation in my joints. He had me try each one in an attempt to see if there was one I could tolerate. He said that depending on the problem, the benefit my outweigh the side effects. My response to the NSAIDs was not GI prblems but lots of swelling in my legs. Some Crohnnies can tolerate NSAIDs - in terms of their guts.

Perhaps that is your GI's approach - seeing if you can tolerate them. If you can, then you have a relief for your joints without using a more potent medicine.

I see, that makes sense. I think I'm gonna try it, right now the joint pain is way worse than the crohns pain. Thank you.

From my understanding, Tylenol isn't an NSAID. That's why GI's often tell you to take it. Tylenol is the brand name for acetaminophen, which is also in hydrocodone (brand names Lortab or Vicodin). It isn't supposed to cause bleeding in the GI tract which NSAIDs can. But it can be hard on the liver, very hard. My PCP prescribed me Mobic for some pain he thought was caused by adhesions (no, it was active disease that had returned quickly after surgery) and I took it for awhile before my pharmacist questioned me on it, it's an NSAID. I was not happy and let the doc know. He said he hadn't realized what it was! Isn't that what the big desk reference book sitting on his desk is for? No wonder it looks dusty! Anyway, I stay away from NSAIDs, I don't think they are worth the risk.

there is another version of vicodon/percocet where they cut down the level of acetaminophen. My aunt is on it b/c of everything else she has to take and she has to be on pain stuff 'cause she has something wrong with her back. She walks a bit humped over, limping when its really bad. :-P I can relate. You might also try that capsasin joint creams. That's what the most recent advice from a doc was for me.

Hey, Jenn.

Not sure why you would be prescribed NSAID... have been told over and over that this is a big no-no for crohnies. I suffer from horrific joint pain right now due in large part to the weather change (my opinion). I have not yet been down the arthritis medication avenue yet. Just take the codine pain stuff with little acetaminophen in it. It helps but doesn't last more than three hours or so. {sigh}

OT SIDENOTE: Got hung up yesterday morning reading that very long post about that oxy pain stuff. Geeze louise that was a controversial topic. Looked up at the clock and I was late for work.

A long hot bath helps me. :)

I would sure ask about the NSAID. Seems odd to me. Good luck to you.

Everytime I have ever taken a NSAID it has caused me to flare really bad. I stay away from them at all costs. JMHO

NSAID equal an increase of a flare to me..I have been wondering about the joint pain issue lately..Last week my joints were hurting worse than it ever has..The last time I had one of my teeth pulled I was given percocet..I did not flare from it, but I was not on it for a prolonged period of time..I was thinking of getting something at the health food store..I was going to pick up a probiotic to take after my antibiotic stent is over while I am in there..

I emailed my doctor asking why the prescription for an Nsaid.  I even had in my original email about my joint pain that Advil would help, but I was always told not to take it, especially after I just had a colonoscopy with biopsies taken and a baloon dilation.  It's kind of annoying that he just ignores what I take the time to write!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I saw my specialist yesterday. With regard to joint pain from lupus, he told me under no circumstances
was I to take NSAIDS. In his opinion it's a huge no no for CD sufferers.

For my joint and tendon pain I'm given muscle relaxers, they seem to work and don't mess with your tummy... Also a low dose of prednisone
can help aliviate some of the inflammation... Good luck

So this is what Doctor said in response to my questioning taking an Nsaid:

Hi Jennifer, although it is an NSAID, it is not very likely to cause bleeding or flare the crohn's. Let me know how it works.

I used muscle relaxers at one point and honestly, they just exacerbate whatever the hell is going on with my arm. The pain killers (both NSAIDs and Trammadol) work to an extent. As does the capsasain rub on stuff. Nothing makes it really better. To be fair, I'm poor and haven't gotten sent to a rheumy yet. We're still waiting for the insurance to kick in...in January. But the RN lady is going to try to get me into this clinic for rheumy (how much, etc.). Honestly from all the reading I've done...I've come to a few conclusions about NSAIDs. They aren't as bad for you as aspirin and ibuprofen. Those are the bleeder meds, they also can cause ulcers which is where the beginning of problems begin for CD patients. When it comes to acetaminophen (Tylenol), unless you already have elevated liver enzymes (which I have), you should be able to take it, but it is definitely hard on your liver. However, drinking cranberry juice which is a great natural cleanser for the urinary system can aid in leveling the liver after taking NSAIDs. And that's about all I know from a lifetime of listening to my sickly aunts, uncles, and parents.

OK but I always assumed Ibuprofin was an Nsaid? I will try it and if I don't find any relief, I'll be off of it very soon!

Ibprufen is a Nsaid. Jennifer try it, but any sign of tummy discomfort, I would really think about stopping. If I take it, I get a kicked
in the belly feeling, within about 45 mins. Good luck hon.
