I started bleeding today in spite of the fact that I am taking bc pills(loestrin 24) and am not taking the brown ones at the moment. I have heard bc pills can cause spotting in between periods, which seems rather pointless to me for those who are looking for shorter periods, and I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this. I just don't want bleeding from that area to be anything else, but I have no idea what else it could be...

Crohn's and some of the meds that go with it can throw the hormones around. BC pills can cause spotting. You are a bit young to be having this problem. Since you had an ectopic pregnancy this year I would recommend you follow up with an OB/GYN and soon. Some months I have multiple periods and I am a moderate to severe case of Crohns, however, I am peri-menopausal.

Spotting is unfortunately a pretty typical issue. Even when I'm really strict about taking my pills on time, I get surprises after my period, like it came back to say hi, haha. For it was just finding the right BC (I'm on yaz right now), and I've had fairly consistent periods the past year. But I agree with Broomhilda--calling your OB/GYN will give you a peace of mind.

After I had my second daughter in dec 2005 my ob/gyn had me go back on bc pills. He started me back on yasmin (even though i got preg with my 2nd daughter on yasmin) and after taking it for 3 months, my spotting between periods didn't stop (they say wait about 3 months and spotting should subside). I was switched to ovcon, loestrin, ortho-cyclen, and a few others that never stopped my break-through bleeding. After about 2 yrs of the bleeding and my doc wanting to put me on nuvaring, i gave in. Nuvaring worked for about a year with no bleeding, but apparently after a d&c and removal of uterine and abdominal scar tissue from my 2 csections and hernia surgery (june 2008), i have a "lousy" uterus and I will continue to bleed. he said the d&c would stop my dysfunctional uterine bleeding for maybe 6 months, but then it will most likely return. he wants to do a uterine ablation...was told i should strongly consider having my 3rd kid asap...

I would talk to your doctor about it. Maybe they can try a different pill or something. The only time I spot on the pill is after I've skipped MANY periods, then I know it's time for me to allow my body to have one. Usually that's after skipping 6-7 months though. I only have a period twice a year.

But then again everyone reacts to the pill differently too, not to mention there's the whole worry about it absorbing properly with our Crohn's!

I have the same problem with the same type of pill. My doc said it happens usually b/c the pill is a very low and gengle dose, and is very sensitive (if you take a pill just a little later than usual, it can result in spotting). I have been on this brand of pills for years b/c it is the only brand that does not irritate my stomach. However, since the spotting is just starting for you, it is a good idea to discuss it with your GYN.

I just went through this and had the same worries as you. I was also worried that the pill might not be doing its job. I was also very stressed out at the time. My doc said the pill is still doing its job and that extreme stress brings on periods for a lot of women. I know it really sucks and I felt like crap when I had it. I felt like it was a real period too, not just breakthrough because I had the moodiness and the aches and pains and cramps and the whole boatload of fun periods bring. I will see if it happens next month. I am on yaz, but have been on the patch and ortho tri cyclen and I believe I have had random periods at times on both of those. I was also worried that mine could be a fistula because when it first came on it was a much more brownish tinged blood and came out unexpectedly all at once but after a day or two it turned to my normal period color and consistency. As I said before I also had all the other tell tale period symptoms. Don't worry too much. I had to put a call in to my doc to feel ok about it though. I just spoke with one of her nurses.

Do any of you get really severe headaches from the pills?
Just a range of new symptoms coming on gradually that weren't there before so I'm wondering..I hadn't realized that BC pills could have so many of the symptoms that they do. I only started taking them this year heh.

For some people the pill can give them headaches. For me I take them to get rid of the menstral migraines that I get! It helps a lot. Although I still deal with migraines. :(

How many months have you been on them? I know they say the first several you can deal with those kind of weird side effects, and then sometimes it can get better. Hopefully! Otherwise sometimes a change in the brand may help too. I tried a few before finding one that I liked.

Chiming in: During the initial diagnosis period, when I was tested for EVERYTHING, part of the process was to visit with an OB/GYN and have sonogram, etc.

Well, during the visit I was telling this OB the horrible periods, cramping, and periods between periods I was having. He suggested I do this procedure where they go in and basically freeze dry the uterus. So, I did it. Since, periods are much much lighter, no in-betweens, and no cramping or lower back pain at all. The procedure was inexpensive, in his office, recovery time was short (2 days - for some 1) and no adverse affects at all. Now, please note, they said I may not be able to conceive... for me this is great because I have one wonderful daughter and I am done in the child-birthing department.
