But I gotta add: I subscribe to the idea that our societies have become so "clean", our kids don't get the exposure at young age to all the "bugs" around the farm and the neighborhood, etc. Our immune systems just don't get "challenged" and the practice in combatting "things" at a young age when the immune system does most of its learning as in past years. Back then we built up an immunity or we croaked. So now more of us live longer and our immune systems have more to deal with that they haven't been exposed to or had a chance to recognize and react appropriately.

Am I reading this right? Is this another vote for our immune systems/genetics being "under-active" instead of "over-active"? Well, bring on more studies, I say! It's always nice to know that SOMEONE is trying to figure us out. And I find this "cause" to be as plausible as many others. Good food for thought.

There are a couple of studies that have shown improvement in Crohn's disease by stimulating the immune system. This runs counter to the theory that it's purely autoimmune.

I don't think they're trying to repair the gene, just increasing the protein that the gene produces since it's low in Crohn's patients. 

It's like the IL-23 gene which is found to be mutated in Crohn's patients.  There are lots of IL-23 inhibitors being used in trials now to block or neutralize the proinflammatory cytokine.  They're not necessarily trying to repair the IL-23 gene.
