Tincture of Opium for Diarrhea

Happy Holidays! May you all feel well this Holiday Season!

I am really sick and it got to the point where I had to say: Here is the deal. If you can't make me any better at least help my diarrhea. So finally after 2 years of me saying this one of my doctors said well we can try Tincture of Opium. And with no thinking about it, I said yes please.... (my friend has been on it for 1-2 years and it really helps her). So I started on it. At first, it really didn't do much. But then I started taking it 2-3 times a day. And boy is it a miracle! You always want to go in between doses so that you do NOT get constipation. So I still go a lot with a lot of blood in between, but it really helps for about 4 hrs @ a time. It is amazing. I highly suggest some of you giving it a try. Yes, it is a controlled substance BUT you take 6/10 of an ML or whatever it is which is a pinch. And it gets our of your system. I have NO side effects whatsoever with it. In my opinion severe diarrhea and blood loss (uncontrollable which is what I have) is a lot worse than taking tincture of opium.

I would love to hear from any of you who are on it as of course what works for me or one of you may not work for the other person. But it is totally worth a shot!

Yep exactly :). And that is why you always want to make sure you go D or whatever you normally do before taking the next dose. It has been amazing for me though....

Unfortunately, NO, it is a prescription! But ask your doctor about it. I guess some won't prescribe it which is to bad. It took 7 years before a Dr. offered it to me and I consider it a part of a miracle. Doesn't help my disease. But it allows me a couple of hrs. of no worrying about not being near a bathroom and I go 5x's a day instead of 20-25 literally (if I take it). You just want to make sure you go in between doses. Make sense? Let me know!

Actually, never mind, I googled and found this so it doesn't sound like something that can be used long term and it seems it mainly aids with D...

Opium is a narcotic used to treat diarrhea or pain.

HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth as directed. May take with food or meals if stomach upset occurs. Carefully measure each dose using the dropper provided. The drops may be mixed with soft food, water or juice. Use this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not increase your dose, use it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit- forming. Also, if used for an extended period, do not suddenly stop using this drug without your doctor's approval. Over time, this drug may not work as well. Consult your doctor if this medication stops working well.

SIDE EFFECTS: Lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision may occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: tremor, mood/mental changes, rapid heart rate. In the unlikely event you have a serious allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: liver disease, heart disease, gallbladder problems, intestinal diseases, an enlarged prostate, asthma or other breathing problems, seizures, drug dependency, drug allergies. Use caution driving or operating machinery or doing activities requiring alertness. Rise slowly from a lying or sitting position to lessen the occurrence of dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Yes, you have to be especially careful with narcotics, thankfully the natural anti-inflammatories I take are all safe and non-addictive.

I tried it for awhile, but it didn't really help the diarrhea that much. It is very expensive, even with insurance.
I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'll have horrible diarrhea for the rest of my life. There aren't any miracle cures....apparently.

Well I wouldn't say we'll all have D for the rest of our lives...although I started out with D and had it for many yrs combined with mush and play-doh type poops I now have formed stool thanks mostly to fibre supplements daily and bee propolis (a natural anti-inflammatory)...problem is even with formed stools I still have some frequency and urgency issues that I wish would stop.

LOL, yes, a good attitude can be very helpful for us in dealing with this dreaded disease...some start though, I've had formed stools for about the last 5 yrs and still the stupid urgency and frequency issues won't quit, just goes to show there are many levels of flaring. I for sure appreciate my formed stools (sometimes I wonder if I should take pictures incase it comes to an end LOL) but getting to full remission has never happend to me yet in my entire 17 yrs of having this stupid disease...I must be way to patient although it does drive me bonkers at times. I care, that's who...because it's bad enough she's suffering with CD she certainly doesn't need to add more problems into her life. I totally encourage her to continue with it and just to be careful, I don't see what harm there is in that or why anyone would take any offence to it either.

Because it say's "this drug can be habit- forming. Also, if used for an extended period, do not suddenly stop using this drug without your doctor's approval." And anyone taking drugs that can be habit forming should use them with caution...Mishball as you stated the Lomotil is not habit forming, tincture of opium is and that's the difference.
