Mike -
First post here, but your question brought me out of hiding as a long-time lurker. Hubby has had Crohn's since his late teens and is now 34. On 6-MP (75 mg/day), Pentasa, and Remicade. (Remi for over 4 years now, 6-MP and Pentasa even longer, and resection a little over 4 years ago). We had QUITE the surprise when we found out we were preggo as I had not missed a single pill and was very cautious about taking it same time each day (and adjusting timezones when traveling so still taking around the same time as back home). We have a very healthy, active, intelligent 19-month old. :) I will admit when we found out we were preggo, we were initially excited, then scared to death. By the time we both made it home from work that day, we knew each other had been researching the internet as reality had set in. Our plan had been like your's --- go off meds for 3 months, start trying, and if no conception after 2 months we had already spoken with hubby's urologist about intervening so that hubby would not be off his meds for too terribly long. (Hubby gets to fight kidney stones as a side effect of Chron's... so I asked the Uro while there with him one day which is how I learned about 3 months to "clear out" the bad swimmers.)
I researched everything I possibly could about 6-MP, visited with a couple of our regular pharmacists, etc. We were seeing my regular OB, and she sent me to a perinatologist for further screening (a high-risk OB --- she sent me not just for his meds but I had very recently dealt with cervical pre-cancer cell removal which made a weaker cervix for me -- something to be aware of with pregnancy). Even though I was only 31, we did the round of bloodtests they give women over 35, so we got to see all the extra cool ultrasounds, and all the other higher risk pregnancy tests. We briefly spoke with the genetic specialist there in the practice and she was familiar with 6-MP. She said "men always get lucky". I know she was putting our minds at ease, but her point she was making was that if it had been ME, the female, on 6-MP, then we might be having a different conversation. I could really only find 1-2 studies of 6-MP taken by males at time of conception. The miscarriage rates were not really any higher than the general population. I just made sure to take extra care of my body. (We were 8 weeks preggo when we found out because my first preggo test at the OB office was a FALSE negative and I hadn't missed a pill, so she said my body might be reacting to a recent procedure I had had done.) Luckily for us, when finding out we were pregnant, we had the normal first-time OB checkup a week later, and the heart was already beating. Nice we didn't have to go through the extra stress of "we're pregnant, waiting for the heartbeat to start" which is usually several weeks later around 5+ weeks. We found out at 8 weeks we were preggo.
Okay - I'll quit rambling - but YES - you CAN have a very healthy pregnancy and baby with the male taking these meds continuously prior to conception. We are so very blessed. I will admit I am terrified to actually "try" for #2 -- I think we have a blessing and am afraid to press our luck -- but that's just me. Sorry if I pulled in TMI, but I definitely remember how scared/worried/paranoid I was with all the meds issue, particularly 6-MP. So little info and past research is available, so I hope this post helps share HOPE that YES... men on 6-MP can produce healthy babies. :) Heck, hubby must have super-swimmers with me on the pill and him on his 6-MP at time of conception!! ;)
Take care of yourself, get your wife on prenatal pills (or Juice Plus or BOTH), and go get busy!!! :)
