Cayer, I can't help but feel you should change your screen name to "kicka*s" !
Actressand writer, I feel for you. I wish I had been diagnosed at your age.
It is worth noting that the line between natural and synthetic drugs with Crohns is a bit blurred. For example methotrexate is just a slightly different form of a naturally occurring substance - a spice if I remember correctly - some cynics might suggest that it was tweaked just so that the drugs company could patent it and make a profit - I'm sure I couldn't comment !
(Given that we have coexisted with the spice for thousands of years, and put it in our food, I know which one I consider more likely to be devoid of serious side-effects.)
Equally, Humira and Remicade (if I remember correctly, and my memory is bad, plus I've not been on meds for ages, so I am ready to be corrected) are just antibodies. Made using mice or bacteria, admittedly, but nonetheless, an organic substance in the same way that insulin (or sugar) is. It can be made by nature, or it can be made by man in a laboratory; the substance produced is the same, Mother Nature is just much more efficient at it. Granted, your body does not happen to make these ones naturally, (unlike many thousands of antibodies) but then you could say the same of any bacteria, virus or protozoan that your body is in contact with - some will have bad effects, some good, some mixed.
Asacol is just a manmade version of a naturally occurring substance, as are steroids.
Natural in medicine may mean good, bad or indifferent; Mother Nature is not any more kindly disposed towards us than a corrupt drug manufacturer or an incompetent legislator, she just has more time to weed out her victim population.
As Paracelsus famously put it, "All is poison, the dosage is everything".
Having said that, I myself have tended to be much better off going down the organic, (salicylate-rich), gluten and dairy-free, probiotic (natural/synthetic yoghurt ?) road.
If you want to find out what is making you ill foodwise, I suggest strongly that you try an elimination diet. It will be difficult, but illuminating ! I suspect that I am not alone in finding that foods fall into three categories; always bad for me, always okay to eat, can eat sometimes but too much or at the wrong time is bad.
It's all clear as mud, isn't it ? !
(But we give excellent advice on which toilet paper brands to buy !
