For those unfamiliar with me. My daughter had a recent 10 day hospital stay for an abdominal abscess with enteric fistula. She had it drained, and has been on Flagyl and Prednisone for about 5 weeks now. 

A couple of weeks ago, she twice had abit of blood after a BM. Most here suggested that it might be a hemorroid, or fissure.

Today, she had quite abit more blood, again at the end of a BM. It's bright red, so I'm guessing that means fresh. She has never otherwise had any bleeding or mucus. I really doubt that it's a hemorroid, as she says she feels no discomfort anywhere. She feels fine, and has no pain during a BM or otherwise.

Does anyone know if this is cause for alarm, or what the blood could be from?  I'm guessing a fissure, as her BM's a quite larger in diameter than she's used to. If so, will this heal on it's own?

I used to have the same thing actually..and then it developed into an uncomfortable hemorrhoid.
Not saying that is definitely what she has though. Just a possibility.

In my experience, fissures hurt and internal hemmies do NOT. I don't know how individual they are though. When my colo-rectal diagnosed me with fissures, I felt like I had paper cuts from the outside-in, and BM's could be very painful for the brief period of time that the stool passed those tears.

Internal hemmies, I believe, can cause similar bleeding but without the pain.

Thanks for the replies, I'm still puzzled by the suggestions of hemorroids. Mainly because of her age I guess. Is there anything else that could cause that kind of fresh blood? It's always at the end of her BM.

My guess is that it is internal hemorrhoids. With the inflammation from Crohn's, they are a common condition. For me, internal hemorrhoids have never caused discomfort. Fissures, on the other hand, made me wonder if I was passing a brick wrapped in barbed wire. If you become alarmed about the amount of blood, you might give her GI a call.

I have had that happen periodically. It has never lasted for more than a couple of days. I did call my gi about it and they said to not worry about it unless it seems like a ton of blood at one time or continues for a couple of weeks.

It did happen again today. This time she said it was only in the middle of her BM, and darker. I'm getting concerned about this, but nothing seems to stand out as serious. The last BM, she had blood when she wiped as well, but nothing this time. Sorry about how explicit, but I guess it's pretty much second nature here.

The nurse called today, as I had called to inquire if there was anything of great concern with this. She felt that it was very likely from the Prednisone weaning. She said that it's common. I've never heard of this at all. I can remember the first time around for Prednisone, my daughter had developed some dependency, but that was marked by severe diarreah. They had to slow the wean down, and everything was fine. She has no symptoms like that this time. Does anyone have any imput on this at all? What would happen physiologically for the Prednisone to do that?

Hi Gwen,

Thanks for asking. She seems to be doing okay. I will likely post an update on Monday, as that's when she goes back for testing to see if the abscess has healed up. She's finally done with taking Flagyl, which I think is what was making her so tired.
