I wonder if perhaps the public dialogue in the U.S. is too focussed on personal "rights", without enough focus on social responsibility.

I've seen it a few times, both in the Pearl Jam discussion and here on HW. In other words, "so what if sick people need the restroom? I have a right to say no", or "so what if my words upset people? I have a right to say what I like". I think that in some other countries people might tend to say "perhaps we have a responsibility to help the sick"...

Just pondering... and do tell me (nicely!) if I'm wrong.

We could also look at it as transient time ,,how much time it takes for stool to expel itself from the body,,some people have constipation and the stool can be in there a long time,, and some people have urine issues,, and some have quick transient time,,these are some of the things needed to be considered. All people's needs should be helped. The problem is Ivy, that there are alot or at least some that think helping the sick is too much responsibility... and some decisions are made by a few and not all people or the majority of people...it's called Not taking responsibiity....lol gail

I love this article, i was discussed with some of the comments. I must say, all i do is stay home, because of this issue. I have to small children to take care of and I have a hard time geting to the bathroom quick enough with both of my girl with me in public.

As for some of the comments about adult diapers, I would be the crohny whom would be more than happy to take a cramp in a diaper to get out of the house more. I just hope when, I do I am around one of those insensitive people who comment on that article. So they can suffer with the gross smell. I will be more than happy to following him all day to get the point how aweful and humiliating this disease can be.

Wow!  It is sad what some of the people said on this article.

The way I see it, one day, something affects each and every one of us.  My Grandmother lived in a senior center where many people did wear diapers.  One day, the very people who wrote those comments could end up having accidents--we just don't know in life, and it is important to be mindful of the needs of others.

Personally, if you want to have a public business, you should offer public restrooms. 

And what about all the non Crohn's related issues for needing a restroom?  If someone walks in and is nauseous, I would rather have them use the restroom than puke on the floor!  Or a child who is in the beginning stages of getting potty trained?  Shouldn't they have access to a restroom?  Or if someone gets something in their eye and needs a mirror?

devil  I was taught that one bad turn doesn't correct another bad turn.  Having said that, I'm throwing out my teaching and I hope just one of those people own a business that "I" have to use the facility on an emergency basis.  If I am denied...I will promptly crap on their shoes and oh yeah, I "might" educate them afterwards that this is the meaning of fecal incontinence and they don't make Huggies big enough for that!  God bless everyone of them though cause their insensitivities WILL come back to haunt them later!  You can bet on it!

Act like you are going to vomit - cover your mouth look green, run in and say BATHROOM. People are so afraid of vomit (and know you cant hold it they will let you right in). Do your thing (leave the water running to drown out poop noises) come out and if your female, smile and say "morning sickness." Lol. Works every time. I haven't tried it personally but have a friend who swears by it.

We already have this legislation here in MN. I have a card from my doctor's office should I ever need it. (Haven't yet.)
There's a law that states that diabetics can bring food wherever we need to as well. I've had MANY occasions where that has helped. (Concerts, sporting events, etc.)

Too bad compassion isn't second nature and laws are required.

Ivy-I agree with you completely on the personal rights issue. I think people are so caught up in the right to being individual and protecting their own interests that it has come to a point where it is actually detrimental to society. It's an extremely selfish viewpoint, and I think people need to wake up to the fact that some decisions need to be made for the BENEFIT of many others and not to protect a business from...what exactly? A sick person using their restroom as opposed to their office floor? The HORROR.

Wow. That one person saying it's like having to where glasses for driving that we should have to wear diapers is just ^&*^R$R&**^**(( to many bad words to say. Ignorant people. :(
