Blood in Stools with the WORST TIMING. Freaking out!

So I've been feeling really good lately, and in a day and a half I'm leaving to volunteer with an NGO and give emergency medical care to people in another country for a month and a half. And everything has been going so well I haven't been worried at all.

And then I came home today, went to the bathroom and enough blood came out to stain the water not just pink but actually red. And I feel fine otherwise, but I'm totally, absolutely freaking out. I don't know where this came from!

Should I freak out? I haven't been aware of my Crohn's that long, does this kind of thing just randomly happen and not become anything? Shouldn't there be a lot pain with blood?

I'm totally freaking out. Not only will be volunteering work be physically taxing, but it's in another country where I don't speak the language well.

Please help me.

Hi Have you any hemroid issues that might be causing the bleeding? I don't have that issue but I am sure others might be able to help. lol gail

Bleeding is one of my big issues. To be honest, I tend not to worry about the colour of the blood, but more so about the the amount. The thing with the bleedings is simple. People think that Bright blood is always from the Anus/Sig. It is not! At times, you can be bleeding from the small bowel and it moves to quick through you to have a chance to turn darker! That ha[[ened to me and I ended up in surgery, not that that is what is going on with you. Was there any pain with the movement? If so, where? When bleeding, with the amount of blood that you have suggested, I would speak to my doctor regardless. It could be Hemies or even an anal fissuer, however, it is best to get it check, espically if your are going away to a country with not the best health care system. Sorry this is happening to you! I suggest you call your doctor and tell him/her what is happening and where you are going. In that way, you can call if you need to when you are away. Maybe he/she can give you back-up meds (like pred maybe???) to take with you just in case. Hopefully you won't have other symptoms and can go and accomplish all that you want to!!

hi there...have you been feeling stress about the upcoming trip?
I know for me stress is a trigger
Maybe try to get into your doc on an "emergrncy" basis today...tell him you are leaving the country and what's going on.

I agree with the others. Will someone on your trip speak the local language. Can you get a short letter explaining your condition and treatment plan in the local language in case you have to visit local care? If it is a 3rd world country can you pack your own needles and IV's. Also, do you have travel insurance so in an emergency you can get a quick flight out of there!! I think you have very good reasons to freak out especially if you have never bled before.

That said, before I was diagnosed w/ crohns I flew to visit my then boyfriend and was very stressed out. After landing at the airport in his city I FILLED the toilet w/ blood. I freaked but just pretended it didn't happen until after my trip was over. (Young and dumb at the time). When I got back I saw my doctor who just brushed it off as a hemmie or fisssure. Fast forward a year or two and I was diagnosed w/ crohns. (I knew something worse was wrong than a hemmie). My point is - I was ok doing what I did. I am trying to give you a different perspective in case everyone gives you scary advice.

That said, I don't think I would have left for a 3rd world country in that condition without talking to my doc first. At least I knew I was staying a major city in the US w/ medical care if I needed it.

That much blood certainly doesn't sound like a hemmorroid.... Think ya oughtta get checked out with the doctor... make sure to describe it like you described it to us.

Don't freak out, blood can come and go and when bleeding it's not odd to not experiance pain with it, I generally don't have gut pain, bleeding or not. Blood is more common when the colon/rectom is affected by disease (inflammation from either CD or UC). Especially if you're generally not feeling worse because of it, just go about and monitor things, you can report it to your doc and see what he says about it.
