Hi I have been suffering with severe constipation for about 12 months and it is gradually getting worse.  I drink heaps of water exercise and eat fresh veges and fruit in my diet .I have slow transit and an exterior anal sphincter defect. I have tried several different laxatives which have been of no help. I was put on a sachet of picolax twice a week and now I am not even having a movement with that. I am on the waiting list for Biofeedback and if that fails it will be a colostomy. I don't know what to do in the meantime though .       Has any one had Biofeedback or a colostomy smhair for severe constipation. I have a neurological disease which is causing the problems.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you ever tried stool softners? They are not laxative, but help to soften the stool to make it easier to pass. I have to use them nightly or if I miss one day not going I am in a world of hurt. Hope that helps.

Have you tried a fiber supplement? Maybe that will help you out... Keep drinking lots of water. I hope this problem gets resolved soon... :(

If you're really bad off I'd suggest drinking some prune juice everyday to help things get better then I'd also go with the suggestions above (fibre supplelemts/stool softner) to keep things going easier.

How about increasing the fats in your diet "just a little bit" at the time. Most of us eat such low fat/no fat diets that creates problems in and of itself. Also, you don't mention if you are taking any kind of pain killers on a regular basis. They are a problem for me and I NEVER get constipated! I've eaten so many pain killers this week with dental surgery after 4 days I laid the whole chicken not just the egg! OUCH!

Hi Welcome to Healing Well are you having fissures with your anal sphincter problem have they mentioned temporary chemical sphincterotomy just wandering if that would help with your slow transit time.. not sure it will help but I whip up a can of pears that get me going when needed although I go on a regular basis it helped clean me out some .. lol gail

I would not recomend taking in any more fiber than you already are. You don't want to bulk up your stool anymore than it is. You mentioned your eating alot of fresh fruit and vegetables, that probably is not helping you either. Skins and seeds are harder for your body to break down. If I personally eat ANY fresh fruits/vegetables, forget it! Why don't you look into a low residue diet, just to see if it works? You never know and it won't hurt you.

Eating fresh fruits and veggies are not constipating, which is why prunes or prune juice aids with constipation, fresh fruits and veggies are very important for the bowels to function. There are different types of fibre, soluble and insoluble but neither cause constipation or make it worse, however it's equally important that plenty of water daily is also consumed.

The anal sphincter defect may be the problem. That and continued laxative use. The defect may be causing the loss of bowel function. The continual use of laxatives will result in loss of effectiveness and resulting worsening of constipation. If it is possible, you might want to try enemas to get things moving and forget the laxatives. Filling your colon with water gives it a stimulus to function and also helps trigger peristalsis. The defect may make enemas painful or difficult, so I don't know if that helps...

I know how you feel. I had a colonoscopy done 4 years back and the doctor told me I had polyps and a tendency to get colorectal cancer. Now 4 years later (and after much abuse of laxatives) I have probably worsened my condition. Since yesterday I am getting a constant burning sensation from inside my rectum. I don't believe it is from hemmoroids (although I am praying it just is). Am going for an examination sometime this or next week if possible.

I too have immense difficulty in getting a bowel movement even after taking laxatives. I am just praying that my condition has not worsened to the extent which may require surgery. cry
