Imuran vs 6mp

I tried imuran but had to get off b/c my liver functions became too high...does that mean I can't take 6mp since they are similiar?...has anyone had high liver functions with imuran and switched to 6mp?

They typically do some bloodwork before you start either medication to determine which one would be better for your body. But it's not always 100% accurate. My results put me in a weird level (I wish I could remember the terms right now or help be more descriptive). So I started on 6-MP but it made me super nauseous. I just couldn't deal with it. My doctor had me switch to try Imuran because apparently a very small percentage of people who have trouble taking 6-MP can take Imuran. I've been having problems recently of being super exhausted, so I'm going off of Imuran for two weeks to determine if that's the cause of the problem. But I hadn't been having the nausea or anything like that on Imuran. Really it depends on your lab results and what the doctor will talk to you about. Wait and talk to your doctor and determine together (with additional research) what you think your next step should be. Good luck!

I just read a study somewhere recently that said actually about half of people who could not tolerate 6 MP did well on Imuran, so it could work the other way around too. I think it's at least worth discussing with your doctor.

I started vomiting after 3 weeks on Imuran. A few months my doc had me try 6-MP but I had the same results. Tolerated MTX fine though. Unfortunately it didn't help.
