For the ladies: Entocort + antibiotics resulting in yeast infection

I recently finished a 10 day course of Cipro and Flagyl for a flare, and at the same time my doctor put me on Entocort.  This morning I woke up with that most lovely of antibiotic side effects, a yeast infection.  I've read that steroids can make you more susceptible to this as well.  I've got a call into my dr to see what to do as far as treatment, but I was wondering if any of you have experience dealing with a yeast infection while on Entocort.  Is diflucan safe, given that Entocort says it interacts with a similar drug, ketoconazole?  What about one of the over the counter meds like Monistat?  Should I stop taking the Entocort for a few days to let my immune system rebound?  My doc told me the Entocort is fine to go off of cold-turkey if the side effects get too unpleasant, because it doesn't do enough systemically to induce the usual steroid withdrawal problems.  Anyone have experience with this?  I'm a little frustrated, finally my tummy is feeling better and now this...

Hi KMM i always get a yeast infection ever time i take antibiotics especially Cipro and Flagyl there both terrible i'm not sure about the entocort and stopping it I'm on Humira but i have to take Gen-Fluconazole,150mg its the only thing that works for me the over the counter stuff might work for you I'm not sure have you ever tried the over the counter stuff or just the prescription i hope that helps you ther is nothing worse than a darn Yeast Infection is there? Sorry to hear about this.  I usually take a probiotic when I'm on antibiotics.  I would call your doc for a script.

Also, my friend uses plain yogurt and although it sounds gross she just smears it in that area and it helps.

You should take a probiotic daily (even if in remission), the probiotic I take actually aids with vaginal health (I used to be prone to frequent yeast infections) haven't had one since taking the primadophilus reuteri daily for the last 5 yrs (it's also aided completely with my lactose intolerance issue which was severe).

It's important to take your probiotics at least 2 hours after you're done taking your antis for the day or the antis will just kill off the pros.

Hi pb4 I've heard a lot about this probiotics but it never crossed my doctors lips is it a natual pill from GNC store for yeast infection or some thing cause ever time i go on antibiotics i get a yeast infection how ever i do eat a lot of yougart does that help or make a difference at all. Please let me know i am gonna ask my doctor about this when she climbs out of the forest that is ? Jenn cry

It's not a GNC product and they don't sell it, I buy mine at my local health food store...eating lots of yogurt should be good too but not likely as beneficial cuz yogurt doesn't tend to have enough bacterial culture in it (the primadophilus has 5 billion per cap)...you can use plain yogurt inside your vagina for yeast infections, ages ago my GP told me about this and it does work well, I know it's sounds gross, but it works, thankfully I don't have to deal with yeast infections anymore since the primadophilus has done wonders for that as well.

Definitely check out your local health food store for it (not GNC) and if your local store doesn't carry it you could ask them to order it for you.

I agree with pb4. I even bought some cheaper probiotics and they worked for me. I plan to invest in some more potent ones next. They work wonders for yeast infections! It is a lifesaver for me. Karen

I had terrible trouble with vaginitis when I was on Imuran. I actually doubled my dose of probiotic (I take the same one as pb4) and have had no problems since. If I miss a couple of days, it'll start back up, so I know it's the probiotics controlling it.

I agree with everyone else - try a probiotic. I usually take them when on antibiotics. I hope you get some relief!
